I was his student around 1991 and he's been on my mind ever since. Just tried to call him and the line was no longer in service. I will miss him dearly, despite not seeing him in almost 35 years. I feel very lucky to have met him at all. Glad he kept up with the birds. Hail, Hail Dr. Larry Olpin!!

Larry was a great guy. He was wise, multi-faceted, soft-spoken, and thoughtful. I enjoyed our conversations and occasionally running into him during his record-setting days of bird counting in Warrensburg for the Cornell Lab. (Our entire family had the privilege of going on a bird watching venture at Pertle Springs with Larry!) I wish our teaching careers had overlapped more. He will be sorely missed! Our heartfelt condolences to Margaret and the entire Olpin family.

I just saw this and am sorry to learn of Larry's passing. I worked with Larry on the Tree Board and travelled to KC with him for a Missouri Forestry Conference one year. I really enjoyed our conversations on that drive and Larry's insights during his years on the board. His service to the community is much appreciated and he will be missed. My prayers are with the family.

Margaret, I just learned of your husband's passing. I know what a loss this is to you and yours. He certainly led a wonderful life and I still remember all the impressive collection of books in his library! When things settle down I will try to give you a call. Much love to you and yours!

I had a class one summer with Dr. Olpin and 30 years later I came out of the woods on a hike and there he was bird watching. He knew my name and my profession and had kind words for my family. He was a great professor and an even better man.

Mr. Olpin as I always called him was a tremendous help and father figure in my life. He was very supportive and always gave good advice (even though I didn´t ask for it) when I was at his home. Great memories of a special person and I will always cherish my memories of him. Rest in peace.

I had Dr. Olpin my very first semester as a student at Central for a composition class. I thought he was a wonderful teacher and my writing improved taking his class. I particularly enjoyed the research writing assignment that he gave us about an officer from Missouri during the civil war. I still remember the assignment well. He will be missed.

I met Larry when I became a Johnson County Master Gardener and we worked together maintaining a garden. In the last year he spoke to the group about gardens and birds. Such a delightful gentleman who will be missed by many. May his memory be a blessing. Jennifer Bradford

I´m so sorry to hear this. He was a great friend who I loved to bird with. I remember our trip to the Zak Zim Bog very fondly as a member of the Olpin Gang. He was always very kind and loved his wife and children very deeply. He will be sorely missed in this world and in the birding community at large.

My sincerest condolences to Margaret and family. Larry was deeply loved by family and friends. His warmth, wit, and charm will be greatly missed. I birded with Larry on several occasions including Burroughs Audubon Society field trips to Knob Noster SP and on area Christmas Bird Counts. Larry was an excellent birder and a wonderful field companion. On one occasion, Larry, Tom Gaines and myself pulled off of a highway into a rural church parking lot to get a better view of several Bobolinks. As we had our binoculars on the birds, a man pulled into the parking lot, got out of his vehicle and approached with his right hand slightly behind his back. He asked us what we were doing, and Larry explained that we had seen Bobolinks as we passed by the church and doubled back to have a closer look. Seeing that the man still had his hand partially hidden, Larry asked "Is that a gun you're wearing?" (He was) The man relaxed and said that he was the pastor and that there had been a number of recent break ins. After introductions and some small talk, Larry showed the pastor the Bobolinks through his binoculars, and we continued on our way. -Mike Stoakes, Lee's Summit, MO

I remember being flower girl at Larry and Margaret´s wedding and being so excited about this sort of fairytale I was a part of (at 4 years old, that´s the available narrative). And then spending a summer in Warrensburg when I was 13 and Al was just born. And the times when Larry and Margie visited me in Boston to shop books and visit Fenway. And long talks about literature and Istanbul. Uncle Larry was wonderful and I am so sorry for the loss my aunt and cousins must feel. Hugs to all!

I have such distinct memories of Larry and the entire Olpin family. He was such a kind person, and knowing him in my childhood, remember he always spoke with me as though we were only a few years apart. My heart goes out to the entire family.

Larry Olson was a great man and friend. He was a family first man, and he headed up a wonderful family. He was a real scholar and wore it lightly--one of the brightest stars of a strong department. And he was simply a very good man. I am glad I knew him, and send my condolences to his family and all his friends.

Prayers and condolences to Margaret and family. I will miss Larry. I was not at CMSU yet when Larry was chair of the English department but he was spoken of very highly when I worked there years later. Emeriti enjoyed his bird presentations and LLL. I saw him last at the Saturday Farmers Market.

I'm so glad to have met Larry on the university's Lifelong Learning committee and later with various Citizens for Environmental projects that he would a participate in from time to time.
It took only one meeting with Larry to realize what a class act he was. Friendly. Dedicated. Hopeful. Humble. And he liked birds.
I imagine most everyone who knew him saw many of those qualities in him too.
"That's our Larry." Someone to emulate.
