Larry Rittenberg Obituary
July 13, 1946 – December 14, 2025
Larry Eugene Rittenberg, 79, of Madison, Wis., passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025. A distinguished academic and professional, Larry dedicated his life to advancing the accounting field and mentoring countless students. He earned his degrees from Michigan State University, where he was honored for his excellence in accounting, and later earned his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota.
Larry spent most of his career at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he taught and served as chair of the Accounting Department. He was a leading figure in auditing and internal controls, contributing to global standards through his work with COSO and the Institute of Internal Auditors. He authored several influential textbooks and received numerous accolades, including induction into the IIA Hall of Fame.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Larry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathleen; children, Brian (Tracy) Rittenberg and Marianne (Darin) Keuhn; grandchildren, Abigail and Mitchell; step-grandchildren, Michael, Phil, and Nick; and step-great-grandchildren, Quinten and Silas.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Cress Funeral Home (Middleton, Wis.). Visitation at 10 a.m., service at 11 a.m., with lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Larry E. Rittenberg MAcc Impact Fund at the University of Wisconsin.
Larry's legacy of scholarship, leadership, and love will continue to inspire for generations to come.
