Larry Robert Schoon

Larry Robert Schoon, age 73, of Appleton, Wisconsin passed away on May 31st, 2024 after a brief, yet courageous battle with lung cancer. Larry was a proud father, a loving brother and a loyal friend and is deeply missed already.
Larry was born in Milbank, South Dakota on April 7, 1951 to late parents Alfred and Kathryn (Taylor) Schoon. He grew up in a large close-knit family with 11 siblings, all who shared a first name starting with the letter “L”. He would often share stories of his childhood of how he liked to taunt the farm cats for a good laugh and how fast he would have to run away from their mean rooster named “Eggburt”. Larry and his siblings remained close throughout the years and always made a point to stay in touch through daily texts and the occasional monthly breakfast.
Larry was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army and honorably served in Vietnam August 1969 - February 1972. He sadly experienced a long list of health issues over the years with being exposed to agent orange however, if you asked him today, he would proudly serve his country all over again, without hesitation. He truly had a heart of gold and a selfless spirit.

In 1985 he married Rebecca “Becky” Schoon (Appleton, WI) and together they had two beautiful children, Shiloh and Krystal. Larry’s children were the highlight of his life and everyone who knew him, quickly learned what a proud father he was. Although his marriage with Becky ended in 1991, they remained good friends throughout the years and still always got together with their kids to share holidays and fun events.
He was also such a proud Grandpa to Gavin, Owen, and Adelaide and cherished every moment with them. He often spoiled them rotten and never let them leave without telling each one of them that he loved them and giving a hug or fist bump.

Larry was the kindest person you’d ever have the privilege to meet. After he retired from driving semis, he lived a quiet life and found value in the simple things. He was smart, sassy (especially in his late years), artistic, and humble. His hobbies included gardening, hunting, medal-detecting, fishing, looking for unique rocks & fossils, restoring antique furniture, and spending time with family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Alfred and Kathy Schoon, brother; Lee Schoon, nephew; Keith Schoon, and brother in law Mike Hopperstad.
His memory will forever be held in the hearts of his surviving family: his son Shiloh Schoon; his daughter Krystal (Ben) Oskey; his siblings: sisters; Linda Tiffany, Laura (Mark) Kohler, Lenore (Vance) Hirst, Lisa (Steve) Weinshein, Louise (Mark) Packard, Loretta (Lyle) Smith, Leah (Robert) Humphrey, Tracy (Aaron) Murray and brothers: Leslie (Tammy) Schoon, Lyle (Betsy) Schoon, Lewis (Patty) Schoon; his 3 grandchildren: Gavin, Owen, and Adelaide and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the Staff at Aseracare Hospice and Meadowbrook Appleton. Eileen, James, Kayla, Marissa, Jake, Jesse, Kayla and Rhianne; you all truly made such a positive impact in our Dad’s last months here with us and we couldn’t have gone through this difficult time without you. Thank you for earning our Dad’s trust and always keeping him in the driver’s seat.

 A private celebration of life will be held for close family and friends on Thursday, June 13th at 5:00 pm in the large pavilion at Telulah Park: 1300 E Newberry St Appleton, WI 54915. We will give him military honors and gather together for one of his favorite meals and treats. Dad had a sweet tooth ;)
