Larry A Thompson

With deep love, the family of Larry A. Thompson announces the peaceful passing of their beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, in Loveland, CO on March 16, 2026.

From the day he was born on April 25, 1942 in Waterloo, IA, Larry was a sports fanatic. Little league led to becoming a three-sports letterman in high school, where he met his childhood sweetheart, cheerleader Kathleen (Kathie) Jean McElroy. This all-American couple wed in 1960. Larry received a football scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa. While pursuing his undergrad and master's degrees, Larry & Kathie had two boys, Brad and Tim.

The young family led a semi-nomadic life, following Larry's chosen career path of football coach. At the high school, junior college and D-1 collegiate level at Duke University, Larry was met with a great deal of success as both an assistant and head coach. He was inducted into his high school Hall-of-Fame as a player, and collegiately as a coach. But no matter where the family called home, the lure of the Colorado mountains called Larry. Many adventures to the Rocky Mountain State ensued. (Larry quickly learned the error of attempting to take a 4-wheel drive only dirt path over mountain passes in the family sedan.) The boys strapped on skis at an early age to keep up with their athletic Dad and willing Mom. The love of the state led the family to eventually settle in northern Colorado, Larry trading in his coaching cap to work in real estate and form his own custom home building company.

There was one thing that Larry loved even more than sports - his family. In addition to his wife of 66 years and sons, Brad (Jan) and Tim (Julie), the lights of his life were his grandchildren, Crista (Chas), Matt (Laura), Leah, Kendall, Drake and Presley. His great granddaughter, Palmer, never failed to bring him smiles, and he was looking forward to the birth of his second great granddaughter, due in mid-April, 2026, and third great granddaughter, due in mid-July, 2026. Larry's grandchildren and great grandchildren embody, and will continue to put forth, his love of laughter, adventure and family. Larry is also survived by his older brother, Dorman (Tommy) Thompson. His sister, Rhonda, preceded him in 2008.
