Laura Catherine Abeyta, 72 of Taiban, NM passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at Parmer Medical Center in Friona, Texas. Laura was born on March 6, 1953 in Fort Sumner, NM to the home of Willie and Billy Dene (Helton) Brownlee. She attended school in Ocate, NM and later graduated from Clayton High School. After high school, she went to nursing school at Clovis Community College. She worked as a nurse at Pecos Valley Care Center in Fort Sumner, PRMC-Presbyterian Hospital in Clovis, and Interim Home Health Services. She retired in 2023.

Laura married Louis Abeyta on April 14, 1971 in Clayton, NM. They made their home in Taiban, NM in 1993. She attended the Church on the Hill in Fort Sumner. 

Laura enjoyed reading, and watching her favorite show Swamp People.

Laura is preceeded in death by her parents, a nephew Clifford Ralph Jones IV in 1980, a grandson Manuel Silva in 2019, a granddaughter Candace Abeyta, and daughter in law Elaine Abeyta in 2006.

Laura is survived by her husband of 54 years Louis Abeyta of the home in Taiban, one daughter Myra Duenas (Ray) of Clovis, three sons Louis Abeyta Jr of Taiban, Anthony Joshua Abeyta (Pauline) of Clovis, and Chad Abeyta (April) of Friona, TX, and two sisters Tricia Potter (Roger) of Sun City, AZ, and Frances Tillery (Dexter) of Clarendon, TX. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and co-workers.

Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Monday July 21, 2025 at Chavez Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Tuesday July 22, 2025 at 10:00 am at the Fort Sumner Cemetery with Pastor Richard Terrell officiating.
