Lauradis Cardet Obituary

Lauradis Muñoz Cardet, beloved wife, aunt, family matriarch, cherished friend, and devoted educator, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Affectionately known as "Tía Lauradis" or "Mrs. Cardet," she was born on August 24, 1934, in Guantánamo, Cuba, to Ruben Muñoz and Juliana "Mariana" de la Candelaria Iribar. One of eight siblings-Leonides, Lidia ("Munga"), Noe ("Nene"), Leovidia ("Nena"), Geny (deceased), Leida, and Lina-she grew up in a vibrant household filled with love and resilience. Her legacy lives on through her devoted nieces, nephews, their children, and spouses, all of whom she guided with unwavering care and affection.

Tía Lauradis often spoke fondly of her childhood in pre-revolutionary Cuba. On October 1, 1962, she married the love of her life, Antonio "Osmel" Cardet (deceased). Together, they immigrated to the United States via Spain, eventually settling in New Orleans. Determined to build a new life, she quickly enrolled in school to continue to learn English and continue her educational journey.

Mrs. Cardet's teaching career began in Cuba in the 1950s. In the United States, she began teaching at St. Leo the Great Catholic School in the 1970s and later spent nearly four decades as a beloved kindergarten teacher at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School. Her classroom radiated joy, warmth, and a deep commitment to nurturing young minds. Many former students would return just to say "hi" and thank her-a testament to the lasting impact she made. Her teaching career spanned nearly 60 years.

While working full-time and managing a household and "Tio Osmel," Tía Lauradis earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from St. Mary's Dominican College in 1975, followed by a Master's in Education from Tulane University in 1983. Her perseverance and dedication were unmatched. She was a tireless advocate for education, encouraging her nieces, nephews, and extended family to pursue academic excellence, often reminding them during tutoring sessions: "Education is the answer to a better life that we did not have as immigrants." Tia also decided to become a naturalized United States citizen in 1983.

Her memory will be cherished forever, and her legacy will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew her. Devoutly Catholic, she was a strong woman with a welcoming smile and a generous spirit. She will be sorely missed. Thank you, Tía for everything. We love you.

May she rest in eternal peace and in the Glory of God.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral Mass at noon. Interment will take place at All Saints Mausoleum at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.

"There are only a few individuals named Lauradis in the world according to Google, ours was the best.
