Dr. Lavern Floyd Hurlburt, age 86, of North East, passed away on Monday April 1, 2025 at his home. He was born March 24, 1939 in Union City, PA, the son of the late Floyd and Carrie Hurlburt.
Vern obtained a Bachelors degree and Masters degree from Slippery Rock State College. After 10 years of teaching and coaching in the Wattsburg Area School District, he went on to Ohio State University to get his PhD. After his return to Wattsburg he became Assistant Superintendent and then Superintendent for 17 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of North East where he served as both Elder and Trustee. Vern loved to play golf at Lake View Country Club and was a member for 35+ years and club President for 3 years. Vern had a passion for flowers and had beautiful gardens on Sunset Beach Road, where he shared gardening with the love of his life Mary "Kitty" Hurlburt whom he married June 14, 2003 and predeceased him on August 27, 2023.
He is survived by his children Michelle Lauffenburger (Vance), Kelly Bonomo (John), Randy Hurlburt (Willow), step-children Lee Burch (Tim), Lyn Kress (Jamie), Ed Redinger (Debbie), Scott Redinger (Cindy), and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Family and friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East on Sunday from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm and are invited to attend a funeral service on Monday April 7, 2025, at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church, 25 West Main Street, North East. Officiating the service will be Rev. Gregg Townsend. Memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church in North East, PA. Please send condolences to elkinfh.com.
