LaVerne L. Schindler, 87, of Orangeville, IL passed away with his family by his side on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the Medina Nursing Center in Durand, IL. The son of William and Ruth (Jensen) Schindler, he was born on December 9, 1937, in Monroe, WI. LaVerne was a 1957 Orangeville High School Graduate. He married the love of his life Anita Wolfe on December 27, 1958.
LaVerne proudly served his country in the United State Air force and was stationed in Fairbanks, AK for 2 years. After returning from the service, he went back to working at the local grocery store in Orangeville, owned by Frank Limacher, where he had worked during high school. In 1963, at the age of 25, he bought the grocery store and named it Schindler's Market. He and Anita owned and operated the store for 32 ½ years before selling it. After selling the store, they moved to a newly built house in Orangeville, staying in the community that meant so much to them. LaVerne then went on to work as a janitor for the Orangeville School District for 12 years until March 2008. For many years, LaVerne and Anita selflessly cared for several foster children, providing them with a safe and stable home. LaVerne was a proud and active Volunteer Fireman for 60 years He retired in 2022 as the longest serving volunteer fireman in Orangeville's history. He was also a faithful member of St. Victor's Catholic Church in Monroe, Wisconsin. LaVerne enjoyed attending local high school games; he especially enjoyed watching and cheering on his children and grandchildren at their sporting events. He spent spare time woodworking making decorative lawn stakes, Christmas ornaments, TV trays, napkin and toilet paper holders, and various other things. He would also find time for fishing and mushroom hunting.
LaVerne is survived by his children- Randy (Lorna) Schindler or Orangeville, IL, Beth (Mike) Whalen of Argyle, WI, Don (Tammy) Schindler of Deerfield, WI, and Sherri Schindler of Monroe, WI; grandchildren- Paul (Sara) Schindler, Scott (Angela) Schindler, Mark Schindler, Holli (Chris Bennett) Whalen, Dereck Whalen, Tyler(Kendra) Whalen, Brady Schindler, Callista Schindler, and Curtis Parmar; great grandchildren- Jailynn, Kennedy, Mason, Norah, Madison, Tate, Dakota, Leo, and Hadley; brother Dennis (Lonii) Schindler; brother-in-law Gary Herbig.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife Anita; parents William and Ruth; stepfather Rolli Wachlin; brothers- William Schindler Jr., and Roger Schindler; sister June Herbig; sister-in-law Rita Schindler; and grandson Heath Parmar.
It takes a special kind of person to care for those in the twilight of their lives, when their bodies and minds are not what they once were. It is with heartfelt gratitude that we acknowledge the care and affection that Debbie Oschner provided for LaVerne so he could stay in the comfort of his home a little longer. Thank you also to the caregivers at Medina Nursing Center who provided hospice care in his last moments.
