Laverne Sumner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Jan. 2, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Laverne Doris Carroll Sumner on December 27, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on August 12, 1950, to Herman and Gertrude Carroll, Laverne was a woman whose presence filled every room and whose love built the foundation of her family. She was a force of nature - a bold, fearless, and compassionate soul who shaped the lives of everyone lucky enough to know her.
Laverne's life was touched by both joy and heartbreak. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved sisters, Audrey Mae Carroll Rowell and Margie Carroll Beazley; her children, Leslie Dana Sumner Place and Larry Dwight Sumner; and her grandson, Keith Rich. Yet through every loss, she carried on with the strength and determination that defined her. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Lisa Denise Sumner Porter (Tim); her grandchildren, Kevin Rich, Taylor Oneal, Haley Varnell (Tommy), Larra Highsmith (Steven), Larry Porter (Layla), Preston; her great-grandchildren, Allyssa, Mikal, Larissa, and Aiden; and a host of nieces and nephews who adored her deeply.
Laverne's love for her family was the cornerstone of her life. She was more than just a grandmother or mother; she was the heartbeat of her home. Her laughter was infectious, her sharp wit unmatched, and her ability to bring people together unparalleled. She could be found throwing down Uno cards with the grandkids, engrossed in a crime novel until the early hours, or watching law enforcement dramas with her signature mix of humor and passion. Her sarcasm and playful banter, exaggerated pretend frustration, and the way she lit up a room will live on in every memory we hold dear.
At home, she embodied southern hospitality. Holidays at Laverne's house were more than meals they were masterpieces, prepared with care and love, over several days, making enough to feed not just family but an army. She extended her warmth to everyone who entered her home, ensuring that no one ever left hungry, including the pets she spoiled with her southern cooking!
Laverne had a way of making everyone feel like they belonged. Whether you were family by blood or a friend of the family, she made space for you. She was the glue that held her family together, weaving connections that will outlast her physical presence. Her love wasn't just felt; it was experienced.
Laverne leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unapologetic authenticity. She was a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, and a friend. But above all, she was ours. She loved each of us in ways that were unique, undeniable, and unforgettable. We are better for having known her, and her memory will remain a guiding light in our lives. We will carry her with us, always.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. followed by the celebration of life service at 12:00 noon. All events will be held at Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, 529 KingsleyAvenue, Orange Park, Florida 32073, (904) 264-1233.

Denise I am so sorry about your mother. I was so happy that she came to Kristens wedding. We all had a good time. I always thought that your mother was so nice. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hearing the passing of Mrs. Sumner has saddened me beyond words. She was a good lady and truly cared for others. I used to work at Orange Park Hospital from 2020-2024 as a registered nurse. Laverne would frequent my floor on many occasions, as always she would make us laugh and was a real hoot. Always enjoyed taking care of her with all her many quirks and her innate ability to find humor in any situation. Laverne could be trying at times but nevertheless she was and will always be my favorite patient. She really was a very special person. Full of spirit and unmatchable energy, no one can compare. May she rest in peace and her family find comfort during this difficult time.
