Lawana Harrell Montgomery, age 81, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at her home with family by her side. She was born on October 3, 1943 to the late Thomas Howard Harrell and Tessie Colvin Harrell in Berrien County, Georgia.
Lawana began her career as a nurse at Candler Hospital in Savannah, working there for many years before moving on to East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, then finally completing her final years as a nurse at Optim Medical Center in Sylvania.
Lawana was a devout Christian, and she was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was described as an avid baker of delicious cakes, cookies, and candies. She was a wonderful mother and a loving grandmother, she loved nothing more than to play with her grandchildren. Lawana was also described as being very athletic, she loved being outdoors, and she enjoyed scuba diving, even teaching her son, Tracy to dive at only 6 years old!
Lawana is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Linwood Montgomery, her sister, Latrelle Prescott, and her brother, Latrune Harrell.
Those who will cherish Lawana’s memory include her sons, Verne J. “Tracy” Pickren of Sylvania, and Mark Pickren of Folkston, GA; brothers, Lamar and Larue Harrell; grandchildren, Thomas Gage Pickren, James Donald Pickren, Colton Lewis Pickren, Jolie Pickren and Benjamin Pickren.
The family receive friends for visitation at Thompson Strickland Waters Funeral Home on Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 1-2 PM.
A graveside service will follow at Screven Memorial Cemetery.
