PALM BEACH GARDENS – LAWRENCE GILBERT MONCHER passed away on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Jupiter Medical Center in Jupiter, FL. He was 88 years old.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 12, 1937, to Eleanor Moncher (née Waxman, later Goldman) and Louis N. Moncher, Larry grew up in Clifton, New Jersey. He graduated from Clifton High School where he played football and dabbled with the trumpet. He attended Rutgers College, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1959 with a major in accounting. While at Rutgers, he was an active member and officer of the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity. He went on to graduate from Rutgers Law School in 1962, becoming a member of the New Jersey Bar that year.
Larry was a U.S. Army Reserve Veteran, serving from 1962 to 1968.
He devoted his career to public service and the law. For many years, he worked as Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Jersey and later served as Chief of the Department of Law and Public Safety. In 1991, he was appointed as a Judge of Workers' Compensation for the State of New Jersey, a position he held with distinction and compassion until his retirement in 2006. He was a long time active and respected member of the Monmouth County Bar Association.
He raised his family in Manalapan, New Jersey, where he and his late wife, Lois Moncher (née Hillman), created a warm and loving home with their 3 children. After Lois's passing, Larry moved to Greenbriar Monroe Township, and later to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, with his wife of 19 years, Arlene Reiter (née Mount).
Larry will be remembered for his keen wit, gentle humor, and generous spirit. He was a long-time avid golfer who enjoyed the camaraderie of the game, and a natural helper whose warmth and kindness touched many lives. Larry's life was one of integrity, service, and love - for his family, his community, and the law. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
He was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Eleanor; his first wife of 42 years, Lois; and his sister, Phylis Moncher O'Brien.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Arlene Reiter; his children, Melissa Moncher Ackerman (Howard) of Princeton, NJ, Leigh N. Moncher (Margarita Ruiz) of Cherry Hill, NJ, and Beth Moncher (Michael Timpanaro) of Marlboro, NJ; and his cherished grandchildren Rachel Ackerman, Lucas Timpanaro, Hannah Timpanaro and Ishmael Moncher.
A chapel service will be held on Friday, November, 7, 2025, at 10:15 am, at MOUNT SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPELS, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, NJ. Interment will follow at King Solomon Cemetery, Clifton, NJ. For directions, please view our "Events" listed below.
