James "Jim" Smith, Ph.D., of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025. Born on September 25, 1941, in Clifton, NJ, he was the son of the late James Smith Sr. and Ethel (née Bollin) Smith.
Jim was a proud graduate of Clifton High School, where he played on the soccer team and developed the determination and curiosity that would guide him throughout his life. He went on to earn his Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University in 1967 and his Doctorate in 1969. Following his internship at a Veterans Affairs Hospital, Jim dedicated himself to helping others through a lifelong career in psychology.
In 1973, Jim joined Hunterdon Medical Center, where he served as a staff psychologist before becoming Chief Psychologist. He was also an adjunct professor, at Rutgers University, teaching and mentoring resident physicians from 1973 to 1983. Alongside his hospital work, he maintained a private practice and authored several published articles, with a particular focus on child psychology. His commitment to improving mental health extended beyond his office-he successfully secured a mental health center grant and served a term on his local school board, where his compassion and insight left a lasting mark.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim lived a life rich with love, laughter, and exploration. He was married to his beloved wife, Shirley, for 60 years; the two were wed on September 4, 1965, and together they built a beautiful life filled with devotion and joy. He was the loving father of Jeffrey and Marc, and the proud grandfather of Taryn, Carly, and Jessica, who were the light of his life.
Jim loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren-playing games, telling stories, and sharing his boundless imagination. He was an avid sailor who found peace on the open water and a passionate traveler who explored the beauty of Europe-France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Greece, Austria, and the Netherlands-as well as the Caribbean, the national parks of America, and the majestic landscapes of Canada. At home, he delighted in reading science fiction, playing cards and games with family and friends, and savoring life's simple pleasures.
Jim will be remembered for his warmth, intelligence, humor, and deep love for his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched-both personally and professionally-and in the love that continues to bind his family together.
He is survived by his wife Shirley, his sons Jeffrey and Marc, and his granddaughters Taryn, Carly, and Jessica. He is also survived by his brother Thomas Smith, a resident of Hawaii. He is predeceased by his sister, Barbara Weir.
