Lawrence Smiley
July 7, 1942 – January 31, 2025
Lawrence Dean Smiley, age 82, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away on Friday, January 31, 2025, at Freeman Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on July 7, 1942, in Neosho, Missouri, to Lemuel and Mercedes (McCrary) Smiley, Lawrence-lovingly known as "Smiley" by many-spent his life in the Joplin area, where he built a legacy of love and service.
A proud graduate of Jasper High School, Lawrence went on to dedicate 38 years of his life to the United States Army National Guard. As a Supply Sergeant and Recruiter, he served in Joplin, Carthage, and Neosho, leaving a lasting impact on those who followed his guidance. His military career was more than a job-it was a calling, and he took immense pride in serving his country.
Outside of his service, Lawrence had a deep love for sports, especially baseball. Whether he was watching a little league game or MLB game, his passion for the sport was undeniable. He was also a member of Harmony Heights Baptist Church and the Missouri National Guard Retiree Council, finding strength and fellowship in his faith and military community.
On December 20, 1963, Lawrence married the love of his life, Patricia Ann McClanahan, and together they built a family filled with love and laughter. After 57 years of marriage, her passing in 2021 left a void in his heart, but he carried on with the same strength and resilience that defined his character.
Lawrence was a loving father to his son, David Smiley (Jan) of Joplin; a proud grandfather to Karissa Smiley-Kreymer (Max), Brock Smiley, and Kamryn Smiley; and a cherished great-grandfather to Valor Hirsch and Iris Kreymer. His family was his greatest joy, and he never missed an opportunity to brag about his grandkids and great-grandkids. He also leaves behind his brother, Roger Smiley (Vickie) of Diamond; his sister, Marcia Allen of Bentonville, Arkansas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever cherish his memory.
Lawrence is now reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Patricia; his son, Danny Smiley; his grandson, Ethan Smiley; and his siblings, Jim Sammons, Mike Sammons, and Paula Lacen.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at a later date to celebrate his life and honor his service to his country.
He was a wonderful grandpa, a devoted family man, and a true patriot. His legacy of kindness and strength will never be forgotten.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
