Ray Daniel Smiley, 81, of New Oxford, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 10, 2025, at his home with his loving family by his side. He was the devoted husband of Lena A. Smiley, with whom he shared 44 wonderful years of marriage.

Born on April 21, 1944, in Hanover, he was the son of the late James M. and Cleo Evangeline (Moubray) Smiley.

Ray was born and raised in the Hanover area and a proud member of his community. He worked faithfully at Hanover Iron Works for more than 45 years before retiring in 2011. A dedicated and hardworking man, Ray took great pride in his career and the friendships he built along the way.

In his younger years, Ray honorably served in the Army National Guard for seven years. He met Lena in 1982, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family.

Ray was an avid gun enthusiast who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and exploring Civil War history with his wife. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, especially his children and grandchildren, who brought him endless joy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lena Smiley; four children: Daniel Lee Smiley and his wife Angie of Indiana, Keith Alan Smiley and his wife Lucy of West Virginia, Brian Ashby Smiley and his wife Brandy of Dover, and Emily Rachel Boyer and her husband Derek of East Berlin; eight grandchildren: Nathan, Ethan, Lauren, Andrea, Jared, Joshua, Autumn, and Gracie; one sister, Patsy Gail Miller of Virginia; and Ashley and Justin Kramer, who were like adopted children and shared a special, lifelong bond with Ray and Lena.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his siblings: James Harvey Smiley, Reba Cleo Sanders, Gloria Ann Salisbury, Larry Eugene Smiley, Linda Carol Bechtel, and Sharon Kay Sterner.

There will be no public viewing. Following cremation, services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Wetzel Funeral Home & Crematory in Hanover is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ray's memory to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
