Lawrence Woodruff Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Gramer Funeral Home – Diener Chapel - Shelby Township on Mar. 30, 2026.
J. Lawrence Woodruff, lovingly known as "Larry," passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, at the age of 91.

Born on September 3, 1934, in Owosso, Michigan, to James and DorothaWoodruff, Larry was a man whose life was defined by devotion-to his family, his faith, his students, and his community. He grew up in the Owosso area and graduated from Owosso High School in 1953. He later earned his Educational Specialist degree from Eastern Michigan University, preparing for a career that would become one of the great callings of his life.

Larry dedicated more than 30 years to education in the Utica Community Schools, where he taught biology and physiology at Eisenhower, Stevenson, and Henry Ford II High School until his retirement in 1993. He was more than a teacher; he was a mentor, a steady guide, and an inspiration to generations of students. His passion for learning and his commitment to young people left a lasting mark that extended far beyond the classroom.

On November 21, 1956, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Larry married the love of his life, Margaret Isabel. Together they built a beautiful life centered on love, faith, and family. Their marriage was a shining example of loyalty and partnership until Margaret's passing on February 22, 2021. Larry carried her memory in his heart always, and it brings comfort to know they will rest together once more.

A man of deep faith, Larry was an active and devoted volunteer at Christ Lutheran Church in Sterling Heights. He gave generously of his time and energy, living out his values through service and fellowship. He also found joy in life's simple pleasures-bowling, golfing, and softball-and especially loved coaching the church softball team, where his encouragement and good spirit brought people together.

Above all, Larry was a dedicated husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his children, Jennifer (Steven) Zott, Deborah (Philip) Woodruff-Wadsworth, Laura (Michael) Wolfe, and Kelly Woodruff; six grandchildren; Jayme (Aaron) Huber, Neal Zott, Janelle Zott, Caleb (Jade) Wolfe, Anna (Nathan) Dudash and seven great-grandchildren; Marlowe, Graham, Teagan and Celia Huber, Levi, Margaret and Fletcher Wolfe. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret; his parents; his grandson, Owen Wolfe and his sister, Ann McDonald.

Larry's life was one of purpose, kindness, and quiet strength. He taught not only through words, but through the way he lived-with integrity, compassion, humility, and unwavering love for those around him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the students he guided, the church he served, and the many lives he touched.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 2, 2026, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Gramer Funeral Home, Diener Chapel, 48271 Van Dyke Avenue, Shelby Township, Michigan 48317, located between 21 Mile and 22 Mile Roads. Larry will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Margaret, at Utica Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Special Olympics or to the donor's charity of choice in Larry's memory.
