Lee Edgar "Ed" Dutton, Jr., of Anderson, SC, passed away on Tuesday, May 14th, surrounded by his family at home, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Ed was born January 11, 1936 in Savannah, GA and raised in Tennille, GA along with his 2 younger brothers. Growing up in a small town with family in Savannah provided lots of adventure and stories to last a lifetime and beyond. Upon graduating high school, Ed traveled to Atlanta where he attended Georgia Tech, Georgia State and graduated from Georgia Southern with an Accounting degree. Atlanta is where he also met his loving wife, Jan.
After a successful career in corporate finance, 27 years in Hickory, NC, Ed & his wife Jan, moved to Anderson, SC in 2005 to be closer to their grandchildren. After retirement, Ed continued to sit on several corporate advisory boards while also serving on the Anderson County Planning Commission. He believed that being aware of what is going on not only in the world but in your community and state are important to making informed decision.
While Ed worked hard and was a valued and committed employee and board member, he played hard too. Over the years Ed thrived on adventure: from hunting and fishing as a boy to as an adult discovering hiking the Blue Ridge and Rocky Mountains, canoeing fast rivers, kayaking, and cross-country skiing in Canada and NC/WV when the snow was just right. During all of this hard work and adventure, Ed was also the rock and foundation of his entire family. Ed never boasted about his accomplishments and generosity as he was a humble, intelligent, well-read, loving, caring and accomplished man.
The family is deeply saddened by his passing. Ed worked out every day and was the picture of health and fitness. At the age of 88 he looked decades younger and continued to be an activist for issues in which he was passionate about. Ed is predeceased by his parents Lee Edgar Dutton Sr. & Louise Roache Dutton and his brother Robert Dutton and his beloved Aunt Marty - Mary Roache Simms. Ed is survived by his wife Jan Dutton, his brother Martin Dutton (Jeanne) of Athens, GA, his daughter Nicole Dutton Finch (Jason), his grandchildren William Colin Finch and Elizabeth Grace Finch, all of Anderson and his sister-in-law Cherry Dutton of Cedartown, GA, his nieces and nephew Mary Dutton Hammond (Mac), Andy Dutton, Amy Dutton Walters (Brett) & Mary Beth Crooks (Logan).
The family would like to sincerely thank Gentiva Hospice for their caring beyond the call of duty. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in memory of Lee Edgar Dutton Jr. to Calvary Home for Children (https://www.calvaryhome.org/donate (https://www.calvaryhome.org/donate) - click Donate and in the notes section indicate in memory of Ed Dutton) This is an organization that Ed and Jan have faithfully supported over the years.
A small family ceremony will be held in the fall, in Savannah, GA at the family burial site.
The family will be at the home Sunday afternoon, (May 19) from 2-4, celebrating Ed's wonderful life.
