Massena: Lee E. Thomas, age 81, and a lifelong resident of Massena, passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at St. Joseph's Health Hospital in Syracuse, NY. Lee was born in Massena on August 3, 1944, to the late Lee E. and Betty (LaBaff) Thomas. His father served in the United States Air Force, and his mother was an executive secretary at ALCOA.

Lee served in the United States Army, serving his country proudly during the Vietnam Conflict in 1966, until his honorable discharge. After his return state side, he began work at General Motors in Massena until his retirement. During which he operated a business in Massena with Roger Clough, known as The Springs Inn, and continued to reside in his community, he called home.

Known affectionately to friends and neighbors as "Gizzy", a name his father gave him upon his return from the Second World War. Lee will be remembered for his enduring connection to Massena and his many friends and neighbors who watched over him in recent years, quiet, steady presence. Gizzy was also a Charter member of the Massena AMVETS Post No. 4, a member of the Massena American Legion Post. No. 49 and Massena VFW Post No. 1143.

Lee is survived by his uncle, the Reverend Arthur J. LaBaff of Clayton, NY and his cousin Carl Serguson of Massena, NY, as well as several other cousins. Amongst others near and dear to Giz, Lori, the sister to his companion Kay, and her husband Chris Perry, as well as many neighbors and friends in the neighborhood who supported him.

In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his companion and close friend of 22 years, Kay (Rush) Kirkey, who passed away on December 16, 2022.

Calling hours for Thomas will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2026, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, with a joint service held by the Massena AMVETS, American Legion and VFW at 2:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am on Monday, February 2, 2026, at St. Mary's Church with Rev. LaBaff officiating. Burial to take place in the spring at the convenience of the family in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
