New Comer Cremations & Funerals - Westside LocationLeendert Schaap ("Lenny"), a cherished husband, father, grandfather ("Opa") great-grandfather and great-great grandfather passed away peacefully at age 100 on March 29, 2026 in Rochester, New York. Born on August 2, 1925, in Zandvoort, The Netherlands, Leendert lived a life marked by dedication, resilience, and a deep love for his family.
Leendert's early years were shaped by many of his generation with the onset of World War II in Europe. He was sent to France as forced labor from age 15-19 and was liberated by American Forces. He demonstrated courage and fortitude as a survivor of that tumultuous time. After the war, he served as a Merchant Marine. In 1962, he immigrated to the United States with his wife and daughter where he built a fulfilling career, dedicating many years to the Eastman Kodak Company, contributing to its legacy with unwavering commitment.
Outside of his professional life, Leendert found joys in simple yet profound pleasures. He loved striking up conversations and making new friends. Having been born in a seaside community in The Netherlands, he was an avid fisherman and treasured spending time on the beach, connecting with nature and finding peace in these moments. He was also an avid soccer fan, following many European and American leagues. He also enjoyed his daily glass of wine.
Above all else, Leendert's proudest accomplishments were rooted deeply in his family. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Volkert Pieter Schaap and Leentje (Paap) Schaap; his devoted and loving wife of 63 years, Johanna, who passed away in 2015; his son-in-law, Septimo Marianetti; and four brothers and three sisters in The Netherlands, leaving behind a legacy enriched by their memories.
Leendert is survived by his beloved daughter, Margaretha D. Marianetti, his granddaughter, Kristine M. (George) Magin, great-grandchildren Kassandra (Timothy) Griffin and Nicholas (Bethany) Magin; and great-great grandchildren Gwendolyn Griffin and Ryan and Nora Magin. His extended family includes his special niece, Bella (Wayne) Van Pelt and their children, Michael (Evelyn) Van Pelt and family and Kim Marie (Chris) Thompson, their son Caleb Thompson along with many nieces and nephews in The Netherlands, who shared in the warmth of his company.
A visitation will be held at New Comer Funeral Home, Westside, located at 2636 Ridgeway Avenue, Rochester, New York 14626 on Friday, April 24, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life at the same location from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., providing an opportunity for family, friends and all who knew Leendert to honor and celebrate his remarkable life. Leendert's family would like to give a special thanks to Edna Tina Wilson Living Center and Rochester Regional Health Hospice Care for their exceptional care. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to either of these facilities in his memory.
Leendert's passing marks the end of an era filled with devotion, resilience, and love. His memory will forever remain a guiding light and a source of inspiration to those fortunate enough to have known him. May he rest in eternal peace.
