Leeward G. Ashline, 85, of Haynes Road, Beekmantown, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2026.
He was born in Plattsburgh on March 14, 1940, son of Victor and Alfreda (Soucy) Ashline. Leeward was a graduate of Saranac Central school in 1959. While in school, he worked for F.W. Woolworth's. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on the USS Wasp aircraft carrier (CV-18). During his time in the Navy, he married his high school, sweetheart, Ruth Caswell in 1960.
After being honorably discharged, he worked for Rosebud creamery in Plattsburgh for over 28 years. After Rosebud, he opened Ashline Grocery, worked as a bus driver for Beekmantown Central School and The ARC in Plattsburgh before retiring.
Leeward was a proud Commander and white hat member at the VFW Post 1466 in Beekmantown. He was also a member at the American Legion and VFW Post 125 in Plattsburgh. In his spare time, Lee enjoyed hunting, gardening, his beloved family, camp and dog Scooby.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Susan Trombley (Steve), Carolyn Johnson (Mark) and his son Richard Ashline (Dawn); brother Victor Ashline; beloved grandchildren, Emily (Patrick), Stephanie (Mark), Pam (Robert), Bethany (Joseph), Zachary (Casey) and Alyssa (Bryton); eight great grandchildren; Ava, Luke, Ella, Jacob, Theodore, Mackenzie, Charlotte and Lorelai. Also surviving him are several nieces and nephews.
Leeward was predeceased by his parents; his loving wife, Ruth; and brothers, Lawrence Ashline, and Robert Ashline.
Calling hours will be held from 3:00 to 5:00pm on Friday, February 27, 2026 at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 5:00pm, celebrated by Fr. Carter Pierce. A reception will be held immediately following funeral services at 5:30pm at VFW Post 125, 116 Boynton Ave,
Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
The burial will take place in the spring at Independence Cemetery in Saranac, New York.
