Leigh Abrams
July 28, 1942 – March 11, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Leigh Abrams, who left us peacefully on the night of Tuesday, March 11, 2025. He was 82 years old.
Leigh was born on July 28, 1942, in New York City to Henry and Geraldine Abrams. He spent his childhood in Washington Heights and cherished summers with his cousins in Milford, PA. Tragically, Leigh lost his father at a young age. To support his mother, he began working at a pharmacy during his teenage years, an experience that laid the foundation for his remarkable work ethic, one that would define his entire life.
Leigh graduated from Baruch College in 1964 and went on to work at SD Leidesdorf, an accounting firm, before a serendipitous walk in 1969 led him to Drew Industries. He would spend the remainder of his professional life there, starting as controller and rising through the ranks to become Executive Vice President, and then CEO & President. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Drew Industries and was a member of the Board of Directors at Impac Mortgage. He retired in 2014 after a distinguished career in leadership.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Leigh was passionate about giving back to his community. He was a dedicated volunteer at several YMCA's in Westchester and played an instrumental role in the Junior Achievement program, inspiring high school students to achieve their dreams.
Despite his demanding career and volunteer work, Leigh always made time for his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a doting grandfather, always present to offer sage advice, as well as a warm embrace when it was needed most.
Leigh was also an avid runner, completing his first New York City Marathon in 1978. Over the course of his lifetime, he ran 26 consecutive NYC marathons, along with marathons in Boston, London, and Stockholm. His fastest time was an impressive 3 hours and 40 seconds.
Later in life, Leigh's heart belonged to his beach house in the Hamptons, where he reveled in the company of his family and friends. He greeted everyone on the beach with his signature smile and infectious warmth.
Leigh is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth (Anderes); his children, Howard Abrams, John (Amanda) Dawson, Hugh Dawson, Ross (Emily) Abrams, and Annie (Paul) Tocco; his nine cherished grandchildren, Aidan (21), Dylan (21), Samson (21), Carolina (20), Kate (17), Owen (16), Ruby (12), Charlie (8), and Zoe (6); as well as numerous close cousins.
Leigh will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. He touched the lives of many with his generosity, kindness, and unwavering support. To know him was truly to love him.
