Son of Lloyd "Dell" Shannon and Gladys Marie "Choate" Shannon. Born on December 24, 1932 in Union County, lowa and passed on July 12, 2025 in Gainesville, Florida. He was 92 years old.
Don grew up on a 320-acre farm and would work the fields starting at the age of 12, He went to a small county school up until 8th grade, and then farm work took over.
Don was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 and became a Master Sergeant in a short period of time. He served in the Korean War as a bomb checker. After the Army, he worked for and drove for some very prominent draft horse owners including C.O. Charlie House, Bill Laughlin (Menzie Dairy Belgians), Harold Clark (Meadow Brook Farm), Charles Bolger (Bolger Clydesdales), Parker Taft (Taft Clydesdales), Owen Sausage Company Belgians, Potter Distilleries Clydesdales, Jim Cosen (Buckner Sprinkler Company Clydesdales), Wilson and Company Clydesdales and the famous Budweiser Clydesdales (Anheuser-Busch). After his 25 year career with the big horses, he became a dairy farmer from 1980-1996.
Don married Donna Marie "Buckley" Shannon on January 19, 1977 in Lake Tahoe and have 1 daughter, Carrie.
Family preceded in death parents Dell and Gladys Shannon, sisters Dortha and Eileen, brothers Charles and Dan and wife Donna Shannon.
He is survived by daughter Carrie, wife of Emanuel Raber of Missouri and Gina, wife of Mark Miller of Texas, step-daughters Casey Shannon of Florida and Gina (Mark) Miller of Texas, step-son Mark Leauthold of Oregon, brother Dean Shannon of Wisconsin, sisters Iris Smith of lowa and Mary Drury of California, grandchild Kayla Raber and many relatives and friends.
