“Sunset and evening star. And one clear call for me!”
Lena Elizabeth (Johnson) Barefield went to be with her Lord on March 2, 2024, at the age of 83.
A Beeville native, Lena was born November 1, 1940, to Lee and Virtie Mae (Brewer) Johnson. A graduate of A.C. Jones High School, Lena went on to further her education and became a beloved headstart teacher with Beeville ISD. She helped shape young minds and instill a love for learning in the hearts of many children. She married the love of her life, Ray Darnell Barefield, on January 27, 1972, in Beeville and was an active member of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church. Lena enjoyed working with her hands, making crafts and creating beautiful wreaths that brought joy to those around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Virtie Mae Johnson; and her daughter, Mae Irene Johnson.
Left to mourn her passing include her husband of 52 years, Ray Darnell Barefield Sr.; her three children, Clayton Johnson, Tanya Barefield and Ray (Jane) Barefield Jr.; stepdaughter, Pamela Mason; six grandchildren, Tashina, Dessiree, Danielle, Trevion, Malachi and Gemineye; four great-grandchildren, Synarea, Jeremiah, Aiden and Layla; sister-in-law, Esther Barefield; special friend, Day Malone Lohse; and several lifelong friends.
Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at St. Rose Cemetery with Rev. Oliver Greer and Rev. Eugene Langley officiating. Special music will be provided by the Beeville Men’s Choir.
Pallbearers will be Craig Jefferson, Jarrod Howard, Charles Bess, Charleston Bess Jr., Jeremiah Reece and Gabriel Benitez.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Barefield Jr., Charleston Bess Sr., Rhea “Rebo” Mayberry and Fred Moron.
“And may there be no sadness of farewell when I have crossed the Bar.”
