She was born on June 27, 1927, in Caraway, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Alfred and Lena (Warren) South. On January 3, 1943, Lena was united in marriage to Clarence Simpson in Caraway, Arkansas.
Surviving are 4 children – Gearldean Hicks, Johnnie (Becky) Simpson, Clarence "Lynn" (Terrie) Simpson and Tammy (Gregory) Jerz; 15 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 36 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers – James South and Joe South; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 62 years – Clarence Simpson; 3 children – Bobby Simpson, Marvalean Leffert and Donnie Simpson; brother – LeRoy South; and 2 sisters – Dorothy Dawson and Opal Carlock.
Honoring Lena's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A graveside service to celebrate Lena's life will be held in Spring 2025 and will be announced at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to Clark Chapel and Cremation Services – Starks Family Funeral Homes, 405 Center St, Dowagiac.
