Lenore "Snooky" Shadle Caldwell, 95, of Wormleysburg, Pennsylvania, passed away on February 16, 2022, at home.
Born January 29, 1927, in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late D. Kelly Shadle, a successful businessman and Helen Margaret (Homler) Shadle.
Snooky was raised in Lock Haven. She graduated from Lock Haven High School in 1945 and Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA in 1949, where shortly before graduation, she met her future husband.
In 1951, while he was finishing law school, she married Thomas D. Caldwell, Jr., who became a Harrisburg attorney. Together they raised a son and two daughters and enjoyed 50 years of marriage until his death in 2001. Throughout her life, Snooky volunteered. As a newcomer to Harrisburg, she became a member of the Junior League, which opened the door to community service. She was a board member with the Tri-County Mental Health Association, the Harrisburg Hospital Auxiliary, the Harrisburg Symphony Association, Homeland Center's Board of Managers, the Dauphin County Historical Society, and the Clive J. Fredricksen Library. She and Tom were members of Grace United Methodist Church on State Street in Harrisburg.
Tom and Snooky maintained a close circle of friends throughout their life together that included sharing over 20 years with their Gourmet Group. Those five couples traveled together to France several times, celebrated every New Year's Eve, and met every other month in their homes honing recipes from Gourmet and Bon Apetite. The years that followed were active with a group that bicycled several states in the U.S. and parts of Europe. She and Tom also enjoyed many games of tennis together, as well as sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. In her later years, golf, a book club, the College Club of Harrisburg, the Questers, an investment group, weekly bridge, and a Friday night dinner table of friends at the West Shore Country Club kept her active.
She was preceded in death by her son Thomas D. Caldwell IV. She is survived by two daughters: Ellen C. Brown of Grantville, (David), their children Lenore Phillips, (Jason) of Wellington, Florida and Thomas Brown of Grantville, and Suzanne C. Orris (Keith) of Haverford, her sister Bette S. Hamilton, of Haverford and nieces, nephews, and their children.
In addition to her husband and son, she is pre-deceased by her brother, Robert L. Shadle, and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Hon. William W. and Janet G. Caldwell, II, Gilbert D. and Martha Jane Diffenderfer, Perrin C. Hamilton, Esquire, and Sally B. Shadle.
A memorial service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, State Street, Harrisburg, on April 9, 2022, at 11:00am with the Dr. Rev. Win Green officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Harrisburg Cemetery.
Snooky's family would like to thank her exceptional caregivers Kristina Sunday, Donna Evans and LaShawn Hall for their extraordinary commitment to her care.
In her honor, please make a contribution to one of your favorite charities or one of hers: Homeland Center, Bethesda Mission or Grace United Methodist Church. Myers-Baker has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
