Leon Don "Little Rock" Pitts

Leon Don “Sheriff “ Pitts, 92, of Little Rock, was born February 21, 1911, in Tucker, AR. Mr. Pitts passed away May 22, 2003. He was the first black automobile salesman in Arkansas for more than 35 years. Sheriff worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a pullman Porter during his early years. He worked for the Cliff Packer Auto Ranch on the Benton highway for 20 years. Cliff Packer once said of him:” that he was honest and treated his customers fairly. They would always come back to buy more cars.” Leon Pitts was named top automobile salesman of the year many times, when he worked for Cliff Packer Auto Ranch and Twin City Motors.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosie Freeman; his father, L. Pierce, MD, of Tucker, AR; one son; four brothers, and three sisters also preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and loving wife, Bernice L. Pitts; a devoted and loving daughter, BerRhonda L. Pitts; a stepdaughter, Ruby Terrell and her husband Lee Roy, of Stanford, CT; one son, Robert Pitts, of Allen Town, PA; one sister, Effie Lee, of Chicago, IL; two brothers, Malvin Pitts, of Little Rock,AR and James LaVan, of Chicago, IL; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. He will be missed.

A gathering in remembrance of Mr. Pitts will be Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist in East End, with Rev. Manze officiating, 901 Calhoun, Little Rock, AR, 72202. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 27, 2003 from 6:00- 8:00 p.m. at Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth, 5800 West 12th Street, Little Rock, 661-9111.
