Leon D Steiger

Leon D. Steiger, 92, of Centre Hall, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Born on June 5, 1933, in Spring Mills, he was the son of the late Randall R. Steiger and Mary V. (Gobble) Steiger. On October 23, 1953, he married the love of his life, Mary Kathleen "Cass" Yearick, who preceded him in death in February 2023.

Leon was a graduate of Gregg Township Vocational School, Spring Mills. After graduation, he was drafted and proudly served his country in the United States Army for 2 years during the Korean Conflict, 1953-1955. Leon went on to work for Piper Aircraft in Lock Haven, PA for 27 years until his retirement.

Leon is survived by his two daughters, Kathy Balliet of Bellefonte and Shawnie Bechdel of Pleasant Gap; two grandsons, Preston and Austin Bechdel of Pleasant Gap; his sister, Doris Rishel of Belleville; one brother, Robert Steiger (Helen) of Spring Mills; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his wife and parents, Leon was preceded in death by two sons in-law, John Balliet and Malvin Bechdel and two brothers, V. Paul "Biff" Steiger and Duane Steiger.

Leon was an avid fan of Penn State football and wrestling. His closest friend, Barry Williams, would always call and check in to make sure that Leon knew the date, time, and appropriate channel for the Penn State events. Leon was also a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He loved watching baseball, no matter who was playing. Leon enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing local streams with his fishing buddy, Russ Beaton, and being in the great outdoors. Leon always mentioned he loved early mornings; they were the best part of the day. He loved spending a lot of time at "Sunrise Camp" with his family and friends. He was a hard working, family loving man that carried many titles, husband, dad, brother, uncle, but his favorite title was Papa.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date and announced when details are available. He will be privately laid to rest next to his wife at the UCC Cemetery in Madisonburg.
