Leonard George Barbieri, Jr.
Leonard George Barbieri Jr., 78, of Hamden passed away at Coachman Square in Woodbridge on December 1, 2025. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Maureen (Murphy) Barbieri of Hamden with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. Known to his family and oldest friends as "Butch," he was born in New Haven on July 10, 1947 and was the son of the late Leonard G. Barbieri and Sylvia (DelVecchio) Barbieri. He was predeceased by his sister Lucia Jewell and leaves behind his brother David Barbieri of Meriden. After high school graduation, he went on to earn a Master's Degree from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. Leonard worked for the State of Connecticut at the Department of Corrections for many years. He served as a parole officer, the Chief of Parole, Warden, and Deputy Commissioner. He believed strongly in reform and helping disadvantaged youth. He was an instrumental part of the community aspect of helping inmates develop lifelong skills upon their release. After retiring from the Department of Corrections, he continued his service as a teacher of Criminal Justice at local colleges. Maureen and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Lenny's passing. We go back to elementary school, and all graduated from HHS together. As his obit states, he was always involved and trying to help.
I wish you happy memories, and God's peace,

I am very sorry to learn this sad news.
I met Lenny when I was teaching a course at SCSU.
The course was Juvenile Delinquency and Lenny was happy to assist my students. He was a very proud SCSU alum.
I checked on a few students who were doing an internship at the New Haven Detention Center.
Whenever I visited, Lenny gave me an informative and excellent tour of the facility.
He was imaginative and totally committed to helping those who are often ignored.
Once we worked together to create a library for people who were waiting to see their probation officer. We were not successful because I could not find a librarian to tell us how to do that.
Lenny never let that attempt stop him from succeeding in a host of other projects.
I occasionally saw him at SCSU football practices. Again, he was powered by his can-do attitude. A truly remarkable man who always led by example.
He was always friendly, happy, energetic and sincere.
I will miss him.

Lennie and i were grammar school friends at ML Keefe through 3rd grade. I will never forget(my father wouldn't let me) when we got caught by his grandmother smoking cigarettes in the cellar window well. We had many fine times in our early youth. RIP my dear friend.

Butch was a neighbor and friend to our family. He would stop by often and engage in discussions about the topics of the day. It was then that we grew to appreciate his progressive thinking and deep understanding of the people whose lives he committed to improve. I for one benefited from Butch´s patience when he taught me to ride a motorcycle. Later in life he kept a watchful eye on my mother, always managing to snow blow her driveway so she could get to work at the high school. A brilliant man with a compassionate heart Butch was a wonderful person. My deepest sympathy to the Murphy family on your loss.
