Leonard Hubbard

Leonard Field Hubbard, MD, of Jamestown, RI, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away on November 26, 2025. A dedicated hand surgeon, he spent more than five decades improving the lives of thousands of patients and took immense pride in helping others.

Born on May 24, 1945, in White Plains, NY, Leonard grew up in Wolfeboro, NH, where he developed a lifelong love for the water. Inspired by his grandfather, Dr. Frank A. Hubbard, he pursued medicine at Tufts University and the University of Vermont. He served as a Naval physician in Okinawa, Japan, before completing a hand-surgery residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. He later practiced in Rhode Island, founding the Rhode Island Hand and Orthopedic Center and becoming a pioneer in microsurgery. Over the years, he helped thousands of patients regain function and quality of life.

An accomplished sailor, Leonard raced competitively, including captaining Sedona in the 1996 Newport-to-Bermuda Race. He continued exploring the ocean with family and friends, often traveling to Block Island, Nantucket, and Cuttyhunk.  He and his wife Jill, united by their love of the sea and adventure, welcomed many into their home and aboard their boat Namaste'. 

Leonard was predeceased by his parents and his nephew Edward S. Hart. He is survived by his wife Jill; his children Melissa Steadman (Timothy), Jonathan Hubbard (Laurie), and Catherine Hubbard; his stepchildren; eight grandchildren; and his dogs Bucky and Cooper.

A private burial will be held, with a celebration of life to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project®.
