Leonard Lawrence Long Sr.
February 17, 1935 – June 2, 2025
Leonard Lawrence Long Sr., a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and decorated U.S. Army veteran, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, at the age of 90.
Born in Quitman, Georgia, on February 17, 1935, Leonard was the second of six sons born to Alene Aaron Long and William Francis Long. From a young age, he carried a quiet strength and deep sense of duty-qualities that would define both his military service and his family life.
In 1954, Leonard answered the call to serve his country and began what would become a remarkable military career. He rose through the ranks from enlisted soldier to Chief Warrant Officer and was later commissioned as a Captain. Leonard proudly served in the U.S. Army Special Forces as a Green Beret and Master Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. His bravery and leadership in Vietnam earned him numerous honors, including the Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, and the Meritorious Unit Citation, among others.
But for all his accolades, Leonard's most treasured roles were at home. He was the steady foundation of his family devoted husband to his beloved wife, Gail Long, with whom he shared 63 years of steadfast love and partnership. He was a proud and loving father to his son Larry (and wife Louisa), and his daughter Ara (and husband Robert). To his grandchildren, Brianna and Tayton, he was their Papa-a source of wisdom, humor, and unconditional love.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Alene and Francis Long; his brothers Ervin, Cornelius, and Rodney. He is survived by his wife Gail; his children and grandchildren; his brothers Hugh (and wife Megan) and Charlie (and wife Anne); his sisters-in-law Olivia and Millie Tyson; his brother-in-law Joe Sports; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will carry his memory forward with pride and affection.
Leonard's legacy is one of service, courage, and unwavering devotion-to his country, his brothers-in-arms, and most of all, to his family. His quiet strength, wise counsel, and deep love will be missed beyond measure.
A military ceremony honoring Leonard's life and service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Friday, June 27, 2025 at 9:30 a.m.

I met Leonard and his family several times at Anne and Charlie Long´s home in San Antonio. I admired his service career and work ethic. Once with my mother, Lucille Hohmann, he told us of his unit parachuting out over our home town of Bastrop, Louisiana on maneuver exercise! We were amazed! Our blessing to the family.
