Leonard (Len) Scaduto, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, and legendary basketball coach, passed away peacefully of natural causes in Honolulu at the age of 93 on May 13, 2025.
Born on April 18, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois to Fred and Josephine
(Calandra) Scaduto, Len grew up in a home four blocks from Wrigley Field, home of his beloved Cubs. Sports became a life-long passion for Len, and he enjoyed a great deal of success as an athlete and a coach. He played football at DePaul Academy (his high school) and then was awarded a scholarship at Northern Illinois University and set many records there as a running back and played on an undefeated team which was inducted into the Northern Illinois University Hall Of Fame. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Northern.
Len went on to coach basketball, which brought him even greater success, beginning with a brief stint at Marmion Military Academy. He then moved on to teaching and coaching at Oak Lawn Community High School in Illinois. His most memorable season was in 1970-71 when he led his team all the way to the Illinois State Championship game, where they lost to legendary Thornridge 52-50. Len was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall Of Fame.
Following his retirement from Oak Lawn, Len and his wife, Lynn, moved to Honolulu where he went on to being Assistant Basketball Coach at Chaminade University (assisting Daryl Lauderdale). An expert on the match-up defense, Len then went on assisting various other teams in Hawaii, with 13 years at the University of Hawaii (helping Riley Wallace), followed by Farrington High School and Saint Louis School (helping Allan Silva), and helping Artie Wilson and Geremy Robinson with the Hawaii Swish (semi-professional team).
Len is preceded in death by his parents and sister Irene, and is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Lynn, his daughter Sandy (Ken) Dalka, sons Steve (Peggy), Ron (Marge) and Bruce (Cindy) Scaduto, step-daughter Laura (Rick) Rodrick, step-sons Lawrence and Jack (Sheryl) Danilewicz, 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Private services were held.

So sorry to hear of Coach Scadutos passing. Like everyone else he had a great impact on my life and coaching career. He always returned a phone call! Always had time to talk strategy on hoops or just life. His records speak for themselves- his children are special adults as well.
I will miss him too - but keep working on his lessons taught.
God bless Coach

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Coach Scaduto. I was honored to have him as my driving instructor and role model. As a proud member of the Class of 1972, I will always remember the thrilling basketball season he led and the incredible team that reached the state championship. In my heart, Coach Scaduto and that team will always be the true state champions of 1971.

Mr Scaduto was my driving teacher & really made it a great experience even though I was a senior from Queen of Peace High School & the other students in the car were all boys from OLHS & younger than me. He gave me all the confidence in the world & told me I was a very good driver. He let me be the first one to attempt new skills & I got to drive on an expressway first. He taught me so well that I have never received a ticket for the 50+ years I´ve been driving. A great man & a very good teacher.

Sorry to hear the Coach passed. He was special and I was glad to be coached by him. We had a great run in 1971 and I was a part of it. We should have won the state championship, but the ref didn't call a foul on Bob Carr. Oh well, it was a great year and so glad that the coach went to Hawaii and enjoyed his life! JT

So sorry to hear, he was my gym teacher and and as a family we where involved with the basketball games that went down state we also rented a motor home and stayed in the parking lot, what great memories, my dad was the unofficial photographer for the games, and lettered the signs at his driving school. My folks also visited them in Honolulu.

Honored to be one of many, to have played for him. There should be a gym or maybe field house??? With his name on it. A legend in olchs history.

My condolences to the Scaduto family. I'm sorry for the family's loss. I attended Oak Lawn Community High School from 1971 to 1975. Mr. Scaduto was my coach in gym class. I also remember that his son Steve, and his daughter Sandy, attended Oak Lawn at the time. Once again my heartfelt condolences for the loss of your Father, grandfather, great grandfather and husband.

My prayers go out to the Scaduto Family. I attended OLCHS, and Len Scaduto was my main driving instructor. Although he is more well-known for his coaching, he produced a long line of excellent drivers. I credit him for my never having an accident that I was at fault. I am now 69. I have shared the "driving tips" I learned from him.
May your good memories help to sustain you as you grieve.
