Leonard Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by G.H. Herrmann Funeral Homes - Greenwood on Mar. 1, 2026.
Leonard Robert Smith, 93, of Greenwood, passed away on February 25, 2026. He was born on April 29, 1932, in Beech Grove, Indiana. He graduated second in his class from Southport High School in 1950 and first in his graduating class from Indiana Central College (now the University of Indianapolis). He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Leonard was a gentle, kind man of great faith. He was quick-witted and intelligent, and he dearly loved his family. He was a student of the Word and a scriptural authority. He retired from Eli Lilly after 34½ years of service as an analytical chemist. While at Lilly, he became an expert table tennis (ping-pong) player and a member of their state-renowned team. He was also an avid bowler and, for many years, bowled in multiple leagues until he was no longer physically able.

He enjoyed all sports and loved watching his grandchildren compete. The Colts and IU basketball games were his favorites to watch on TV. He enjoyed classical, jazz, and Cuban music, and he loved to read.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton Smith and Ina (Smith) Harkness; step father Wayne Harkness; sister, Linda; and his daughter, Pam (Smith) Todd.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elsie Smith; his son, Alan (Kristi) Smith; three grandchildren, Ryan Smith (Lainey), Amy Spencer (J.T. Spencer-deceased), and Katy Holcomb (Jeff); and nine great-grandchildren, Camden, Mackenzie, Payton, Charlee, Aubrey, Townes, Thomas, Louie, and Oscar. Along with many nieces and nephews throughout the United States.

It was his wish that no visitation or funeral be held. A celebration of Leonard's life will be held at a later date.
