MARQUETTE, MI - Leroy McCormick, age 75 of Marquette, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud U.S. Army veteran, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 18, 2025, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, surrounded by his family and caregivers.
Leroy was born in Escanaba, Michigan on February 2, 1950, the son of Archie and Goldie (McNamara) McCormick, Leroy was raised in the Gladstone Flat Rock area. He graduated from Gladstone High School with the Class of 1968. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served honorably during the Vietnam War era as a medic.
Following his discharge, Leroy returned home and soon met the love of his life, Gail. The two were married on July 3, 1976, and built a loving life together for 49 years. They began their married life in Newberry before eventually settling in Marquette, where they raised their family.
Leroy held various jobs over the years before accepting a position at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans. There, he served with dedication as a CNA for more than 30 years, retiring at age 58. In the final chapter of his life, Leroy returned to Jacobetti as a resident, where he was surrounded by the community he had long cherished. One of his proudest moments in later years was taking part in the UP Honor Flight in September 2022.
Leroy was a quiet, gentle, and thoughtful man who found joy in simple pleasures. He enjoyed working on cars, bowling on a local league, playing horseshoes, and spending time with friends and family, especially during card games or friendly competitions. He also appreciated a good nap. Above all, he adored his grandchildren, who brought endless happiness to his life.
He is survived by his wife, Gail; his children, Kristopher McCormick of Marquette, Branden "Bud" (Melissa) McCormick of Marquette, and Alison (Kenny Ray) McCormick of Marquette; and his grandchildren Callie, Amellia, Kyra, Cole, Riley, Dylan, Porter, and Parker. He is also survived by his siblings Bernard (Sharon) McCormick, Donna Hutchinson, and Dale (Vicky) McCormick, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mona Bruce; and his brother, James McCormick.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activities Fund, 425 Fisher Street Marquette, in honor of Leroy's years of service and the care he both gave and received there.
Honoring Leroy's request no public services will be held. The Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services is serving the family where condolences may be expressed online at fassbenderswansonhansen.com
