Rev. Leroy D. Moon, 85, of Clarksburg, passed away unexpectedly Friday evening, August 12, 2022, while working on his farm.
Born May 2, 1937, at home near Tipton, he was one of seven children of Wilbur and Marguerite (Sinclair) Moon.
Leroy was a 1955 graduate of Otterville High School.
On October 12, 1958, he married Jean (Reeves). They were married 29 years before her passing on July 28, 1988. Together they had three children, Raydean, Rosie and Randy.
On December 23, 1989, he married Marietta (Cogdill) Alonzo. They enjoyed 32 years together until his passing.
Leroy attended seminary at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City. He pastored many Southern Baptist churches in Missouri over the years, including Hopewell Baptist in New Bloomfield, New Bethel Baptist in Jackson, Parkview Mission in Jefferson City, Long Branch and Yates Baptist in Kansas City, Mt. Olive Baptist in Florence, Fortuna Baptist in Fortuna, Pilot Grove Baptist in Pilot Grove, Clarksburg Baptist in Clarksburg, and Pisgah Baptist in Prairie Home. He was currently serving at Providence Baptist Church in Smithton.
He had a heart for serving in all facets of life, but especially when it came to pastoring. He was good about visiting his parishioners and wished for everyone to come to know the Lord. He had a strong prayer life.
He taught junior high math at Syracuse, Fortuna and Tipton schools, as well as coached junior high girls' basketball. He had a degree in education from Hannibal-LaGrange College.
Leroy was a lover of sports. In his younger years, he pitched for the Harmony Baptist league fast-pitch softball team. He loved watching his grandkids play sports, as well as attending various football and basketball games in the community.
He was a hobby farmer, raising cattle, hogs and chickens. He always had a big garden and enjoyed sharing the produce. He also liked to fish.
Leroy will be remembered for his sense of humor, his fun-loving way, and his generous heart. He made an eternal impact in this world and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving are his wife, Marietta, of the home; daughter, Rosie Moon, of Stover; son, Raydean Moon, of Eldon; stepchildren, Peter Alonzo (Leslie), of Hoffman Estates, IL, John Alonzo, of Elburn, IL, Nancy Bortolameolli (Gene), of Appleton, WI, Rose Nelson (Kevin), of Jefferson City, and Joe Alonzo (Cheryl), of Jefferson City; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenny Moon (Kay), of Florence, and David Moon (Mary), of Ft. Smith, AR; two sisters, Joyce Kelso (Alan), of Kearney, and Margie Nau, of Higginsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Jean, he was preceded in death by a son, Randy Moon; and two brothers, Donald and Vencil Moon.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Otterville, with Rev. Terry Barnett officiating.
Casket bearers will be Trenton Pummill, Raden Layne, Chris Pummill, Jason Seehusen, Dylan Seehusen, Adam Alonzo and Evan Moon.
Burial will be in Tipton Masonic Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 19, 2022, at Meisenheimer-Page-Dady Funeral Home in Tipton.
Memorials are suggested to Providence Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home.
