Leroy Elliott Tirrell, lovingly known as "Lee," passed away peacefully on July 2nd at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH. He was 89 years old. While his passing brings sadness, his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Lee was the eldest of four sons of Elliott and Doris (Erikson) Tirrell. He grew up in Belmont, attending Belmont public schools and graduating from Belmont High School with the Class of 1954. As a young man, he served as Master Counselor of the Belmont Chapter of DeMolay, reflecting an early commitment to leadership and community.
Lee had a strong interest in accounting and finance, which led him to the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in Boston. After completing his studies, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he trained at the Army Finance School in Indianapolis. He was later stationed at Fort Devens, Fulda, Germany, and served on temporary duty in Watertown, NY.
After his military service, Lee began his career at Price Waterhouse in Boston. He continued his education, earning both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master's in Taxation from Bentley College. He later joined American Mutual Insurance Co. in Wakefield as Vice President of Auditing. Eventually, Lee opened his own firm, Leroy Tirrell, CPA PC, where he served generations of clients with care, skill, and a genuine personal touch. He retired at the age of 85, capping off a long and respected professional life.
In 1956, Lee married his high school sweetheart and lifelong partner, Carolyn "Lynn" Palmer. They built a warm and loving home in Burlington, MA, where they raised their four children. Lee deeply valued family time-camping trips across the country and a memorable family journey through Europe were among his most cherished experiences.
Lee had many interests outside of work. He enjoyed playing tennis and golf, and he was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox. His easy smile, sharp wit, and love of wordplay made him a joy to be around.
Lee was also a dedicated member of the United Church of Christ, Congregational (UCC) in Burlington, where he sang in the choir for 62 years and contributed in many ways. His beautiful voice graced countless weddings and memorial services, and he gave generously of his time and talents to the church community.
Throughout his life, Lee exemplified kindness, integrity, and generosity. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Lee was the beloved husband of Carolyn "Lynn" Tirrell for 69 years. He was the caring and supportive father of Richard Tirrell and wife Zara of Virginia, Donald Tirrell of Georgia, Douglas Tirrell and his wife Betsy of Maine and a daughter Cynthia Tomaswick and her husband James of NH. He was the proud grandfather of Ashley (Tomaswick) Williams and her husband Cory, James Tomaswick and his wife Colleen, Caileigh Tirrell, Hannah Tirrell, Linley Tirrell, Calvin Tirrell, and Alyssa Tirrell. He was the great grandfather of MacKenzie, Olivia, Ellie and great grandson due in August. Lee's delight was in the little ones who lovingly called him Poppa. He was the brother of Robert Tirrell and his wife Virginia, Elliott "Bud" Tirrell, and the late Edward Tirrell. He was also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visiting hours will be Friday July 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington, MA. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12 at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 6 Lexington St, Burlington, MA.

I was so very sorry to hear about Lee´s passing. Lee and Bob were good friends throughout high school and youth group at Belmont Methodist. We also were able to touch base with Lee and Lynn at our reunions. Again, I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Love, MaryJayne Kolouch
