Lester Avery Murphy Sr.

Lester Avery Murphy Sr., 77, of Aztec, New Mexico, passed away on February 9, 2026, in Farmington, New Mexico, surrounded by the love of his family.

Lester was born on January 4, 1949, in Meeker, Colorado, to William Luther Murphy and Eunice Maxine Cress. He grew up with strong values, a hardworking spirit, and a deep love for family that stayed with him throughout his life.

Lester proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Sample (DE-1048). During his service, he earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was honorably discharged, carrying with him a quiet strength and pride in having served his country. After his military service, Lester worked in the oil fields, where he dedicated 40 years of hard work before retiring.

More than anything, Lester was a family man. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a wonderful brother and uncle. He had a way of making people feel welcomed, cared for, and loved.

Lester found joy in the simple things in life. He loved fishing, drawing pictures, playing football and baseball, and spending time playing card games with family. Family gatherings meant everything to him.

He also enjoyed spending time in Grand Junction with his brother Bill Murphy; his niece Christina (Damon), Kevin, Kyauna, and Kimmi; and their families.

Lester is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Gail Murphy; his sons, Lester Murphy Jr. and John Murphy (Corina Murphy); and his daughters, Mailene Elswick (Matthew Elswick) and Laura Bundy (Bruce Bundy).

He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Ashlie Davidson (Dustin), Amber Baca (Gustavo), Giana Murphy, Gemma Murphy, Geordy Murphy, Derek Bundy, Ashley Bundy, Quienten Davidson, Houston Davidson, Camila Baca, Olivia Baca, Eliana Baca, Arya Baca, Bentley Paz, and Jasmine Pez.

He is further survived by his siblings, including William Murphy, Martha Hilkey, and Linda Boswick (Dan); his sister-in-law, Maria Arredondo (Bajo), Raenell (Art), and Marilyn (Jim); his brother-in-laws, Raymond and Georgie; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William Luther Murphy and Eunice Maxine Cress; his brothers, Jimmy Murphy and George Murphy; his sisters, Mary Theilan and Helen Murphy; his granddaughter, Amanda Paige Holmes; his mother-in-law, Molly; and his sister-in-law, Linda.

Lester will be remembered for his kind heart, his quiet strength, and the deep love he had for his family. The memories he created, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

We will always cherish the time we spent together. Your love, laughter, and memories will stay in our hearts forever. You will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

A memorial service, led by his nephew Steve Murphy Sr., will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Minium Park.
