MSgt Lewis J. Kollmeyer, a man who could disarm you with a joke and a smile just as easily as he could with one of his prized firearms, passed away on April 7, 2025, at the youthful age of 76. Born on September 28, 1948, in Wichita, KS, Lewis traded the open plains for the open seas as he embarked on a 23+ year career with the United States Marine Corps, ultimately holding the esteemed rank of Master Sergeant.
Lewis was no ordinary Marine; in Vietnam, he earned his combat aircrew wings and served as a Crew Chief Gunner, ensuring that the skies were just as safe as his cherished fishing spots back home. Known for never meeting a stranger, Lewis could find common ground and humor with anyone, whether in the heat of battle, reeling in a big catch or through his love of animals.
A devoted family man, Lewis leaves behind his beloved wife, Mary Kollmeyer, who could probably write volumes about their adventures together and still chuckle through every chapter. His beloved cat Lil (Shit) Bit who was always on his lap. His legacy will also continue through his daughters, Kitten and her daughter Sierra, Marie and her sons Nick and Philip, and Sam and her sons Luke and Daniel, who will no doubt carry on his gift of laughter and love. All of Lewis' family have been left with stories galore and the perennial knowledge that Papa's jokes, wit, and laughter were always the best part of any gathering. Lewis was above all devoted to his entire family, and always strived to support and care for them.
Services celebrating Lewis's life and spirit will be held at Johnson Funeral Home of Jacksonville. Join his family for an evening of stories and laughter on Monday, April 14th, from 6 - 8 PM. A Memorial Celebration Service will take place on Tuesday, April 15th, at 12:30 PM, followed by a burial with Marine Corps Honors at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Lewis lived his life like an action-adventure comedy; he embraced every moment, loved fiercely, and always found time to share a laugh. His absence will be deeply felt, but his stories, humor, and love will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew him. As Lewis would surely remind us, heaven just got a little more entertaining with him and his famous beef jerky.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made directly to the SECU Family House of New Hanover here https://www.tmcfunding.com/funds/fundraiser-to-assist-the-secu-family-house-at-novant-health-nhrmc/13074/.
