She was born in Mitchell, South Dakota on July 11, 1944, to Milo and Caroline (Schumacher) Strand. The youngest of three, Lila grew up on a farm south of town. Early education was in a one room schoolhouse; Lila graduated from Mitchell High School in 1962. Moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lila attended and graduated from beautician’s school. While in Minneapolis, she met her future husband, James Griggs of Atlanta, Georgia and married him in 1965. Throughout her life she was involved in many civic, Church and singing groups. For many years she owned and operated a home daycare service. All of the daycare families were blessed by her caring spirit and infectious laugh.
After Jim retired, they moved to Florida. Lila lived her remaining years on the shores of Daytona Beach. Building friendships, generous hospitality, and love for her Lord Jesus Christ, characterized her life. She especially enjoyed her friends in the Bible Study Fellowship and the Daytona Beach Symphony Society.
Loved by her husband of 58 years, Jim of Daytona Beach Shores. She is survived by her son Rev. Matthew K. Griggs and wife Emily of Minnesota, her five grandchildren (Eliza, Caleb, Cheyenne, Gillian and Levi) whom she loved greatly. She is also survived by her brother Del and his wife Marilyn and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents one niece and one nephew and her sister Violet Wesseling.
