Lila Proffit Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Downs Funeral Home - Superior on Feb. 7, 2026.
Lila Caroline Proffit, 102, daughter of the late Leon and Elizabeth (Fenske) Peltzer, born April 20, 1923, in Broken Bow, Nebraska, passed away peacefully, Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Middle River Health & Rehab., South Range, Wisconsin.

Lila had a twin sister, Lela, and they were the youngest of 9 siblings. The family lived on a farm in Berwyn, Nebraska and later moved to Mountain Grove, Missouri for a couple of years before moving to a farm located in Douglas County. Lila completed her 8th grade at Copper Creek grade school the year they moved to Wisconsin. She graduated from Superior Central High School with the class of 1941. After graduating, she worked as a shoe clerk in Superior before her marriage to Francis Schmid, a farmer from Foxboro, Wisconsin. They had 5 children. She became a widow at a very young age and after all her children were raised, she married Howard Proffit of Superior.

Throughout Lila's lifetime, she experienced both good and bad hardships that made her a stronger individual. She was a farmer and homemaker before working as a dental assistant and later for Superior Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, reading, playing cards, dancing, gardening, bowling, golfing, going fishing, snowmobiling, canoeing and so much more. She was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and the guiding light for her entire family. They all admired her selfless strengths.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Francis Schmid and Howard Proffit; daughter, Janette Jakoubek; daughter-in-law, Denise Schmid; granddaughters, Janelle Sherwood and Julie Jakoubek; great granddaughter, Audrey Clara Tingey; her sisters, Ruth Davidson, Naomi Morris, Vera Burdick, Katherine Thornhill, and Lela Peltzer; and brothers, Edwin, Alfred, and Alvin Peltzer.

She is survived by her sons, Jerry (Darlene) Schmid and James Schmid; daughters, Patricia Nielsen and Marcia (Jack) Kief; 14 grandchildren, 29 greatgrandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family of Lila Proffit would like to thank all the staff at the Middle River Health and Rehab Center, for all the kind and loving care they provided during her residence there.

Services are being planned and will be announced at a later date.
