Lillian Marie Hernandez peacefully passed from this life the morning of Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025 in her home at the age of 82.
Lillian was born on September 18, 1942 in Port Arthur, Texas to George Leo Scully and Anne Marie Scully. She spent her formative years in Port Arthur and graduated from Bishop Byrne High School where she met John "Chino" Hernandez who quickly became her high school sweetheart and eventually her husband when they married a few years later on July 6, 1963. They eventually moved from Port Arthur to Longview, Texas where they would make their home and start their family with the birth of their daughter Lynda in 1966 and Natalia in 1968. Known for having a strong work ethic, Lillian spent 30 years as a secretary at Texas Eastman. Lillian loved life and found joy in being a mother and a grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family where ballroom dancing and music were sure to be center stage.
A devout Catholic, Lillian was the light of Christ to all who were blessed to know her. Her journey on this earth was one of love, kindness, compassion, and an unwavering faith in God. With every smile, kind word, prayer and selfless act, she left a lasting impact on the hearts of those around her. Her love of Jesus and devotion to her Catholic faith was evidenced by her attending daily Mass, Liturgy of the hours, Eucharistic adoration and praying the Rosary daily. She served the poor as a Lay Missionary of Charity and in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. She was also active in the Joy Ministry and Our Lady's Guild. She prayed unceasingly and was so humble and filled with the Holy Spirit that God was able to speak and work through her.
Chino's mother, Alicia Cantrell Dillon, was a well-known Author Murray dance instructor and over the years Lillian and Chino became immersed in ballroom dancing as did so many of their family and friends. They were exceptionally talented and after Alicia retired, they continued teaching ballroom dancing to the Longview community.
In 2012, Lillian was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. As the disease progressed, she realized she was forgetting things, and told her daughter, Lynda, "I don't know what I will remember but I don't ever want to forget Jesus." Her devoted husband, John, lovingly cared for her in their home (in sickness and in health, till death do us part), showing us what true love looks like; they were married for 61 years.
Lillian is preceded in death by her parents, George and Anne Marie Scully; and her siblings, Mary Gaspard, George Scully Jr, Patricia George and Helen Gilmore.
She is survived by her loving husband, John "Chino" Hernandez; her daughters, Lynda Maxwell (Mike), Natalia Clark (Don); her grandchildren, Dylan Maxwell (Ryley), Donovan Clark, Garrett Clark (Hannah), Liliana Clark, Connor Clark, Kady Wise (Nathan); and her great-grandchildren Summer Dai, Mason Maxwell, Maxwell Wise and Lucy Clark.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. A rosary will be prayed beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 24th, 2025 in the Cammack Family chapel. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation immediately following the rosary from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to those who helped care for Lillian, especially Maria Salinas, Mazell Strange, Lauren Eddington Tran, Marie Garrett, Cathy, Patricia, CiCi and Hazel as well as the nurses, caretakers and staff at LifeCare Hospice.
Her life lives on in the memories we cherish and the love she so freely gave.
