Lillian Steadman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services - Hartford on Feb. 3, 2026.
Lillian "Ninnin" Steadman was born on March 1, 1943 in Norwalk, CT to the late Essex and Ruby Simmons. She peacefully entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 26, 2026 surrounded by family and friends.

Lillian was predeceased by three siblings, Vera Townsend, Marvin Simmons (Lalul), and Essex Simmons, Jr. She has one surviving sibling, a sister, Barbara Simmons Preston (Donald predeceased).

She married James Thomas Clemons (predeceased) in August 1964. Three children came from this union Dawn Clemons, Eric Clemons, and she was predeceased by her son, Sean Clemons. She is also predeceased by her loving daughter-in-law, Sharon Clemons.

In 1983 Lillian married Carwin Steadman of Stamford, CT. He preceded her in death in 1986.

Lillian was a longtime resident of Norwalk, CT. She attended Norwalk public schools and also attended Norwalk Community College to study art. She was a talented artist and enjoyed sketching, painting, and sculpting.

Lillian began her Christian walk at Miracle Temple under the stewardship of Rev. Joseph Clemmons. In later years, she became a faithful member of First Baptist Church under Pastor Horace Huff's leadership until declining health no longer permitted.

As a youngster, she volunteered as a hospital Candy Striper. Lil began her career in communications as a telephone operator for SNET (Southern New England Telephone). She continued in telecommunications at Pitney Bowes where she was employed for more than 20 years. While there, she became an active and very vocal member of the CPR (Counsel of Personnel Relations).

In the late 90's she moved to Detroit. While a resident of the Motor City, Lil found fulfillment in her position with the American Red Cross of Michigan as an event coordinator. Upon returning to Connecticut, she accepted a position at the Veterans Administration in Bridgeport, CT.

Lil was extremely civic minded. As a political activist Lillian marched for civil rights, veterans affairs, and employees rights. After losing her son Sean to gun violence, she went to Washington D.C. to march with MAGV (Mothers Against Gun Violence). Lil loved animals and like her father, Essex, she was known for bringing home strays in need of love and care.

Lillian was a member of Unique Productions. A social club that awarded college scholarships to aspiring young doctors. It was here she earned the nickname "Operation Pisces" because of her uncanny ability to get things done behind the scenes.

Lillian leaves behind six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren to cherish her memories. They affectionately called her "Ninnin". They include Courtney Clemons, Kiara Clemons, Demerre Files, Nyle Clemons, Nia Clemons, and Kai Clemons. Greatgrands include Joel Rhodes, Micah Clemons, Mina Osborne, Leia Osborne, Nehemiah Clemons, and Lawson Osborne. Godchildren include Ryan Fisher, Aaron (predeceased), Errick, Gary, Antonio and Chila Greenlee. Honorary sisters include Judy Canty, Nancy Clark (predeceased) and Penny Greenlee, along with a host of nieces, nephews and honorary sons and daughters.
