Northern Maine was noted for record low temperatures in the winter months and February 1941 was no exception. Situated in Old Town, Maine, on the northern side of the Penobscot River, was a little hospital where on February 25th, 1941, a baby girl was born. Her name was to be Linda Ellen Grant, born to Grace (Andersson) and Wendell B. Grant, Jr.
Residing within sight from her room, was two sights of this beautiful old town. One being Maine's original Native American tribe (The Penobscot Tribe), and on the East side was the famous Old Town Canoe Co., which still operates there today.
After a short stay, the family left to live with relatives in another beautiful Maine town called Rockland. The house was located on top of a hill overlooking the Ferry Boat landing and the Maine coast. Linda tells the story of most days, at 3 o'clock, the ferry boat whistle would sound and the children would wave toward the ferry, where Linda's uncle, Captain Ross Eator, was at the helm driving the ferry from Rockland to Casco Bay.
Another move put them into another coastal town called Brooklyn Maine. Here, Linda went to school in one of Maine's one room schoolhouses, where, today, one exactly like hers is set up in Old Sturbridge Village.
Located just down the road was one of Maine's famous children's book authors named E.B. White, where Linda's father worked part time and sometimes brought Linda with him, where she had the opportunity to read with this famous author. Because steady work was at a premium during these times, her father was lucky enough to be hired by the Wyman Gordon Co. located in Worcester, where the family was once again relocated. Linda's fathers name, along with many others, was engraved on the Wyman Gordon honor roll located in the rotunda entrance to Wyman's for serving in the U.S. Navy. After being discharged and returning to Wyman's, the family once again moved. This time to the Town Of Leicester, MA. where Linda became a member of the graduating class of 1961. Shortly thereafter, she became an employee of Worcester Fire Rating Bureau.
In 1965, Linda was married to Bob Lauzon, and they moved to Auburn and started a family. Linda and Bob celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2015.
Linda gave birth to two sons, John R., husband of Julie A. (Mckenna) Lauzon, and Jeffrey R. Lauzon. Linda was a loving and caring wife who also worked 25 years as a Crossing Guard for the Auburn Police Dept. and the Auburn School Dept. She was predeceased by both parents and a brother (Wendell B. Grant, III). She also leaves her adoring Grandson, Nicholas Lauzon, and her cats, who were raised as family.
Linda was a very loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. After a slow start in traveling, she soon became a world traveler in most of the European countries. She also visited almost all the U.S. States, traveling with Bob to his Navy reunions, held in a different part of the country each year. She was very happy being a homemaker and enjoyed her trips to the Casinos for shows and entertainment.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Veteran's Inc, 69 Grove Street, Worcester, MA 01605, and/or to your local animal shelter to honor Linda's love of cats.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the Lauzon family between 2 – 4 PM on Sunday November 23rd at the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central Street, Auburn. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Monday November 24th at St. Joseph's Church, 189 Oxford Street North, Auburn, with burial to follow at Hillside Cemetery.
