Linda R. (Tedrow) Macleod, 87, of North Kingstown, RI, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the Roger Williams Hospital Cancer Center in Providence, RI after an illness of several years. She was the beloved wife of Wallace N. Macleod, with whom she shared 65 years of marriage and 70 wonderful years together.
Born in Mishawaka, Indiana in1937, Linda also lived in Minnesota,Vermont and finally settling in Rhode Island, as her father pursued employment in the lithography industry, in 1949. During WWII Linda lived on her grandfather's farm in New Carlisle, IN while her father was in the Navy.
Linda graduated from Lockwood High School in 1955 before earning her degree in botany (high honors) from the University of Rhode Island in 1959. While at URI she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. Linda worked her way through college via scholarships and part time jobs.. One job, interestingly enough, was teaching speed reading to engineering students.
Linda worked part time at the URI Plant Pathology lab as a student and full time for several months after graduation. Linda and Wally were married February 6,1960 (literary license claiming 65 years) and accompanied him to Fort Sheridan, IL where he was posted with the Army. She obtained employment with Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, IL in the area of genetic research. Linda and Wally returned to RI in April of 1962 where they were able to purchase a home in North Kingstown. They lived there happily for 62+years. Linda worked in real estate after her children were grown, first with DeFelice then Coldwell Banker, retiring in 1994. Linda volunteered for many years in the Emergency Dept. of Kent County Hospital and was a member of the East Greenwich United Methodist Church's choir.
Linda was an enthusiastic tennis player both in the West Bay Area and especially in Touisset Point where they summered for 25 years. She was an exceptional cook, seamstress, URI Master Gardener, a physical fitness advocate, (jogging and swimming),season ticket holder with Wally of the URI men's basketball team (18 years) and traveler. Through Rotary International exchange programs Linda and Wally established warm friendships with Rotarians in England. Their daughter, who worked in London after URI graduation, established the Scottish connection by marrying a Scotsman from Aberdeen, Allan Fiddes. This resulted in many enjoyable visits to his folks Ron And Margaret in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Most of all Linda was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband Wallace MacLeod; her three children: Scott W. MacLeod (Erin) of North Kingstown, Roderick N. MacLeod (Michelle) of North Kingstown, Heather L Fiddes (Allan) of Norfolk, MA ; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild and her sister Judy Archer of Edmond, OK. She is predeceased by her parents: Clarence "Bill" and Dorothy (Groshans) Tedrow and siblings: Mark E. Tedrow and Kathy Greene.
Visitation will be held at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., concluding with a funeral service. Burial to follow at Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery in North Kingstown, RI.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice, and an act of kindness in memory of Linda would be a fitting tribute to her life well lived.
