Llewellyn "Lew" Charles Bengtson, 94, of Rothsay, passed away at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls Thursday, June 26, 2025.
Lewellyn was born the second of five children on April 7, 1931, to Charles and Cora (Brenden) Bengtson. He was raised in Erhards Grove Township on a farm which he continued to work, until the age of 89 with the help of his good friend, Dan Bauman. He attended school at District 17 in Erhards Grove.
He served honorably in the United States Army. Upon returning home from service, he married Colette Stensrude on October 23, 1953.
Lew was an honest man of integrity and respect, and nothing short of a hard worker. Along with farming, Llewellyn worked as a butcher for National Tea Co. from 1955 to 1960. In 1960, he entered a 30-year service with the Fergus Falls State Hospital as a plumber. He continued working part-time for four years as a plumber with Moorhead State College. He married Laverne Lileks Nelson in 1987.
Llewellyn loved music and played drums in the family band as a youth. He also loved nature and wildlife; taking several trips to Canada on moose hunting and fishing trips. He was an avid baseball fan, playing for a semi pro-community league in Erhard. Lew's love of baseball not only fulfilled him in his younger years, but brought him great comfort in the later years of his life; he never missed a baseball game on TV, especially the Twins.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Arnold; sister, Lavonne Gilbertson, and his wives, Colette in 1985 and LaVerne in 2021.
Llewellyn is survived by his children, Debra Schnoor of Fergus Falls, Steven (Marilyn) Bengtson of Underwood, and Joanne Wolf of Hawley; brother, Merlin (Darlene) Bengtson of Erhard; sister, Delores Pederson of Fergus Falls; eight grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to all those involved in the care Lew received towards the end of his life.
A private family service will be held, however, visitation for the public will be held from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM at Olson Funeral Home.
