Frederick, Lois Arlene
SCHENECTADY - Lois Arlene Frederick, known affectionately as Arlene to her friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Kingsway Arms Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Education and athleticism were central to Arlene's life. She graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in the Class of 1947, where she served as president of the Girls' Athletic Club, competed in various sports, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Arlene's passion for education and sports led her to Cortland State Teachers College, where she played on various teams, was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honorary Society, received the Women's Athletic Award, and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education in 1951. Her pursuit of knowledge continued at Albany State Teachers College, where she majored in Guidance and earned her Master's Degree in 1957.
Arlene's professional life was dedicated to inspiring young minds as a physical education teacher in the South Colonie Central School District, a role she cherished until her retirement in June of 1985. Additionally, she was a key player on the White Sox Basketball Team, contributing to their championship wins from 1954 to 1960. Her love for sports extended to the Western Turnpike Golf Course, where she was a seven-time Women's Club Champion and served as President of the Women's Organization. She participated in the Channel Master's Bowling League in Schenectady from 1954 to 1980 and competed in state and national tournaments, leaving her mark in the sport's community.
Arlene loved her camp on Saratoga Lake. She devoted countless hours to a vegetable garden, growing pumpkins for the children in the family and pickling the fruits of her labors to share with friends and family. When younger, she welcomed family to the camp every weekend in the summer with massive pots of tomato sauce and pasta. Arlene gave back to the lake community through her long-standing service on the Board of Directors of Riley Cove Corporation.
Another passion of Arlene's was traveling as often and for as long as possible, at least once a year, for 70 years. Throughout her life, she explored the United States and Europe, bringing back photos to share and decorate her walls with. Her journeying started with driving the Alaskan Highway in 1957, and one of her most impactful trips was visiting the Sistine Chapel.
Arlene's Catholic faith was a cornerstone of her life. She served St. Thomas Church in Schenectady with devotion, holding roles including contribution recording secretary, evangelist recorder, DDP fund assistant chairman, parish list keeper, lecturer, and morning prayer leader. She was also an active member of the parish council and the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
The family thanks the caring staff at Kingsway Arms Nursing and Rehabilitation for making Arlene's final years as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
