Born on February 6, 1929, to the late R. Mervin and the late Annalee Bounds, Lois R. Gross was welcomed into her Heavenly Home on Sunday, September 7, 2025. The middle child between the late Jean Hubbard and the late Mervin “Bud” Bounds, her family moved to Baltimore when she was a teenager, where she met her husband, Richard C. Gross, Sr. while working at a soda fountain. Their 76 years of marriage produced six children: the late Cynthia Wieland, Kathy Myer (the late Michael), Richard C. Gross, Jr. (Gina), Marcia Moyer (Jeff), Stephanie Caulfield (Michael) and Jennifer Gross; 28 grandchildren, and 41 great-grandchildren. She also was a proud aunt, and holding little ones brought her the greatest joy. Her large family knows what a blessing she was as the matriarch. Lois was a woman who knew the importance of faith, family and community. She passed onto her legacy a desire to serve.
Besides the countless hours spent in service to the schools and school systems attended by her children, Lois was deeply devoted to ministry at Christ the King Church (Holy Trinity). She was a member and officer of the Blessed Virgin Sodality, served on the Parish Council, the Liturgy Committee, the Legion of Mary, as an EMHC and for over 25 years, served alongside her husband, Richard, leading the Marriage Preparation Sessions for the area parishes.
Lois was a proud citizen of Glen Burnie, serving as an active member of the Glen Burnie Improvement Association and working with local politicians as a member of the Urban Renewal Advisory Board. For over 50 years, she devoted countless hours in service to Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland. In the mid 1970’s Lois orchestrated the availability of Meals on Wheels through the cooperation of all of the churches in Northern Anne Arundel County, which she visited individually, asking for their support. She served the program as a volunteer coordinator, driver and a visitor, as well as a Board of Director Member, receiving the Beatrice Strouse Award in 2008.
Lois was the recipient of multiple awards and citations throughout her years of service, including the 1986 Elk’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year, 1990 Archdiocesan Medal of Honor, and a 2007 inductee to the Maryland Senior Citizen Hall of Fame.
Her family will honor her memory by continuing to serve, just as she did her whole life.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Lois’ life. There will be visitations on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Singleton Funeral and Cremation Services in Glen Burnie, MD, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and again that evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated the following day, starting at 1:00 PM, at Christ the King Catholic Church (formerly Holy Trinity), 7436 Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard in Glen Burnie.
