Lois Hebert Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 15, 2024.
Lois Marie Hébert was born into the beautiful union of the late Alex Hébert Sr. and Mary Lee Hébert on October 5, 1959, in New Orleans, LA. She was the youngest daughter of thirteen children, raised up with love and abundance in the Desire Housing Project, where she participated in neighborhood sports such as softball and volleyball. Affectionately known as 'Yogi Bear', Lois was beloved amongst her church, community, and family. A faithful life servant of the Lord, she was baptized on June 5, 1960, by Reverend Morris A. Edwards of
The Carver Desire Baptist Church in witness of her parents, and godparents, Elizabeth and Herbert Robinson. The Hébert Family attended service regularly, where she and her relatives volunteered and participated in the church choir. Educated in the New Orleans Public School System, Lois was a proud alumnus of George Washington Carver High School. She went on to receive a technical degree in Office Administration with a focus on Data Processing and Secretarial Studies at The Cameron School of Business, which she used to secure positions at NASA, Sears, Hewlett Packard, The Department of Family and Children Services, and The Extra Mile SE.
In the mid 80s, Lois met Aaron Porter, who became her companion. After the death of her sister, Mrs. Deborah Mathieu, she assumed the legal guardianship of her two nieces, Deljuana Hébert and Keotha Mathieu, who became their daughters. In the late 80s, the couple relocated to Atlanta, GA., where their family of four became a bustling household of six, as they welcomed daughters Geneva Hébert and Tremeka Hébert. Lois was a devoted mother and fierce supporter of grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved her family unconditionally.
Lois loved the Lord with all her heart, mind, and soul. She dedicated her life to honoring, serving, studying, and worshipping Him. She was an esteemed member of Salem Baptist Church, where she and her daughters sang in the choir under the music direction of Shirley Wilson. Under the theological leadership of Reverend Jasper W. Williams, Jr., she graduated Salem's School of Ministry, where she received accolades for her outstanding service and commitment to her faith. She valued the teachings and words of Jesus, found in the book of Matthew, the expressive words of praise found in the book of Psalm, and most importantly, she valued the life advice and wisdom found in the book of Proverbs. Her favorite scriptures were The Lord's Prayer and The Shepherd's Psalm. She was a known music connoisseur, but particularly enjoyed gospel artists Aretha Franklin, Mahalia Jackson, Shirley Caesar, and The Winans Family. Lois was a woman of faith and revolution. She stood up for her beliefs, even marching in protest of corruption, racial injustice, and inequality.
Lois continued exercising her passions for softball, as she was a member of a softball team for the SW Atlanta Department of Family and Children Services. She and her teammates were awarded individual trophies for winning the 2005 SWP Summer Championships. After her daughters left the nest, she relocated back to Louisiana, where she took up residence in Marrero. She spent the last glorious moments of her life finding fulfillment in teaching bible study, volunteering, serving the homeless, cashiering part-time for Winn-Dixie and Academy Sporting Goods Store.
Lois loved spending quality time with her family and fur baby, Piper. She especially loved shooting dice and playing games such as Dominos, Spades, and Skipbo. Her passions
included creating art, baking, cooking, family, music, roller-skating, sports, and studying God's word. She was a superfan of Michael Jackson and the Jackson Family, Bob Marley and the Marley Family, The Doors, Ice Cube, Lee Oskar, Peter Frampton, Prince, Spragga Benz, WAR, and other music legends. She was tickled by comedic legends Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, Katt Williams, Martin Lawrence, Red Foxx, and Richard Pryor. A proud FANATIC of the Green Bay Packers, she would be the only green and yellow in a sea of black and gold. We all knew Aaron Rodgers to be "Her Boy!". All that knew Lois would describe her to be a tenacious, firecracker of a spirit that defended, loved, and supported her family ferociously. Joyful and radiant, she was beautiful inside and out. She was 'The Cool Aunt, The Cool Mom, The Cool Grandma, and The Cool Friend' to all that she touched. Nicknamed 'Yogi Bear' by her youngest brother, Kevin due to their shared passion for food, Lois expressed her delight with uncontainable joy. Like Yogi and his iconic "pic-a-nic" basket phrases, Lois had her own signature expressions - "Get Down, With the Get Down!", "It's On The Money!", and "Yeah! Yeah!", which became iconic amongst those who her. She was inspired by Chefs Bobby Flay, Emeril Lagasse, Leah Chase, and Paul Prudhomme, and enjoyed preparing dishes from them. Her culinary prowess was notable and beloved amongst the family, with her recipes being most coveted. She happily shared her recipes with those that she knew, including Food Network's Chopped victor, Chef Scott Maki and wife, Cami Maki. Family gatherings and holidays hosted by her were always a treat, as one was prepared for a feast with Gumbo, Stuffed Bell Peppers, Banana Blueberry Cream Pie, Buttermilk Pie, and Sweet Potato Pie being signature featured dishes. You could always count on Lois for an incredibly prepared meal.
At 10:05pm, July 27th, 2024, the ten-year heavenly ascendence anniversary date of her favorite elder brother, Larry 'Bear' Hébert Sr., Lois Marie Hébert was called home, at the age of 65. My mother empowered me to embrace my identity as a proud, gifted Black woman. She encouraged me to cultivate my talents and to live a purpose-driven life, guided by faith and not by societal expectations. "Live for God, not man," she would say. Through her example and guidance, she instilled in me the values of resiliency and independence, teaching me to pursue my passions and become a woman of substance, and to be unapologetically myself. She taught me to be cultivated and cultured, a woman of elegance. She was a Queen raising Princesses. I love you so much mama, and I am gonna miss you. I am burying my heart with you tomorrow. Please don't ever leave me. I love you!

Hi Mama,

It's me, your Special Baby Girl. My heart is bleeding and my world is the darkest shade of gray. I thank God for gifting you to me. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. Coming up, my mother was firm and strict, because she was an old-fashioned mother, a nurturer and protector. THE BEST MAMA! You were always there, devoting your time, motivating, and supporting us. As a woman, our mother-daughter bond deepened, we were Frick and Frack. I am distraught that my best friend is gone so suddenly. My fondest memory of us was at Michael Jackson's "Heal The World Tour". You've got to be a helluva mother, to get your girls front row to the King of Pop. In my big grown age, I am gonna miss cuddling and laying in your arms. I am gonna miss your voice, your laugh, your scolding, your passion, and your infectious excitement for the things that bought you the most joy. I am gonna miss holding your hand and feeling your fingertips graze across my face. You prophesied that in a year or two, you will have a grand-daughter, and even took the liberty of naming her. Our little bet is still on! If I win, I'm expecting you to pull some heavenly strings! Help me hit that Powerball! LOL! I love you so much woman, and I am gonna miss jamming with you and making you laugh. My dinner forever date! I'm gonna miss checking out new eateries, trying new recipes, and frequenting our favorite spots. Losing you, I am so lost without you. Please don't ever leave me mama. I love you.
