Lois Hentschel Gardner, age 90 of Kentwood, met her Savior Jesus Christ face to face on November 5. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helene Seidelman; her first husband, William Hentschel of 32 years; her second husband, David Gardner of 15½ years; and her brother, Bruce Seidelman.
She will be remembered by her four children, Dan (Linda) Hentschel, Douglas (Diane) Hentschel, Judith (John) Grooters, Nancy (Dan) Ross; 11 grandchildren; Jordyn (Zach) Osburn, Erin (Andrew) Lake, Amber (Alan) Moore, Jedidiah (Brittany) Grooters, Stephanie Hentschel, Matthew (Kristin) Ross, Jonathan (Daneli) Hentschel, Emily (Dylan) Kreisel, Joel (Samantha) Ross, Joshua Hentschel, and Ryan Hentschel; and 26 great grandchildren.
She also will be remembered by her brother, John (Lynn) Seidelman; also, her step family, Patti (Bob) Kramer, Stephen (Cheryl) Gardner, Elaine (Doug) Hollen; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Lois was married to Rev. William Hentschel in 1958. They were the parents of four children, Daniel, Douglas, Judith, and Nancy. He preceded her in death at age 53.
Lois was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 15,1935. Lived in Detroit, MI, and graduated from Cooley High School in 1953. She attended Voice of Christian Youth High School Bible Club and accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior there when she was 16. Lois left Detroit in 1953 to attend Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music graduating in 1957. In 1954 she became the secretary to President John Miles and managed Student Accounts until the fall of 1960. She also served as dorm-mother for women, and the pianist for the Fishers of Men's Quartet. In September 1958 she and Bill Hentschel were married. He also was a graduate of the Grand Rapids School of the Bible Music and its Seminary. They then served as dorm parents for the Men's Dormitory. He became the Pastor of Smyrna Bible Church during his last year in Seminary. Rev. William Hentschel and Lois served a total of 32 years in four Bible church pastorates in Smyrna, MI, Chicago, IL, Charleston, IL and Oakwood Bible Church 16 years in Kalamazoo, MI. Bill Hentschel passed into the Lord's presence on August 22, 1990 at the age of 53. Lois then worked as a secretary at International Research and Development Corporation and cleaned offices following Bill's death.
Nine years later in 1999, she was married to Rev. David Gardner, who also preceded her in death in 2014 at age 84.
David Gardner had been a missionary in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea for ABWE since 1967. Lois then attended Candidate School at Baptist Church Planters and they then served 15½ years as itinerant church planters in many US church plants that needed temporary pastors. In 2006 Dave and Lois moved to Kentwood, Michigan and attended Good News Baptist Church. Lois became a member at Good News and served in various capacities. She was a Sunday School teacher for 6 years and served as President of the Women's Missionary Fellowship for many years.
The family will greet visitors on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 from 10 to 11 am at the Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th Street, SE, Grand Rapids; where a service to remember Lois, will begin at 11:00 am. Interment will be in Mt. Ever Rest Memorial Park South, Kalamazoo, MI. Contributions in memory of Lois, may be made to Goroka Baptist Bible College, Papau New Guinea.
