Lois Maxine Huckstep, age 96, passed away peacefully on 21 Feb 2025 in Meridian, Idaho. She was born on December 17, 1928, in Eagle, Idaho, to Harold Tayloe Pfeiffer and Emily Virginia Myers Pfeiffer. The second of four children, Maxine was a sweet and cuddly child. However, her life changed drastically at the age of 13 when her mother passed away unexpectedly. She was forced to grow up quickly, taking on the responsibilities of cooking and caring for her younger siblingsdespite having never even boiled water. This early responsibility helped shape her into the strong, capable, and nurturing woman she became.
After completing high school, Maxine pursued nursing. During her training, she met the love of her life, William Delbert Huckstep, at a dance. At the time, nursing students were not permitted to marry while still in school, but Maxine followed her heart and married Bill on June 14, 1949, in Winnemucca, Nevada. As a result, she was unable to complete her nursing degree. However, her dream of earning that degree was later recognized when she was granted an honorary nursing degree from St. Lukes Hospital in 2015. That same year, Boises Mayor Beiter designated July 20th as "Lois Maxine Pfeiffer Huckstep Day" in honor of her lifelong service and dedication to others.
Maxine and Bill were sealed in the Logan Temple on 15 June 1953, and together they raised eight red-haired children, who became affectionately known as 'The Huckstep Clan' in their community. They purchased and then built the large swimming pool in Idaho City, known as Warm Springs Resort, which they operated for many years. These were wonderful and joyful days for the family. As Bills house-moving business flourished, Maxine managed the pool, their home, and their growing familyall while serving in her church and community.
A dedicated leader in the Boy Scouts of America, Maxine played a pivotal role in developing booklets that helped boys track their progress from Webelos to Eagle Scout. Her contributions helped simplify the scouting process, making it more accessible for countless young men. For her efforts, she was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award, recognizing her exceptional service.
Maxine was a woman of optimism and resilience, always carrying a bright smile and a positive attitude through lifes challenges. She instilled creativity, hard work, and self-sufficiency in her children, encouraging them to develop their talents and contribute to their family and community. In the late 1970s, the family built a cabin near Idaho City, which became a cherished gathering place filled with laughter, love, and many church and scouting events.
Maxines legacy lives on through her posterity, which includes 45 grandchildren and multiple great-grandchildren, all of whom she deeply loved and treasured.
She is survived by her eight children:
Betty (Sheldon) Hunsaker of Las Vegas, NV
Daniel (Janet) Huckstep of Boise, ID
Larry (Debbie) Huckstep of Richmond, UT
Patricia (Stacey) Noakes of Eagle, ID
Scott (Loretta) Huckstep of McCammon, ID
Dorothy (Matthew) Falke of Hickman, CA
Bob (Gwen) Huckstep of Eagle, ID
Connie (Bill) Goehring of Boise, ID
Maxine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill, who passed away in 2011. Her family takes comfort in knowing they are joyfully reunited in Heaven. She is also survived by her sister, Reta May Pfeiffer Allred. She was pre-deceased by her brothers, Harold Roy Pfeiffer and Don D. Pfeiffer.
Maxine was a beacon of love, service, and faith. She touched countless lives and will be deeply missed. Her family expresses profound gratitude for the many friends, neighbors, and loved ones who shared in her journey.
