Lonnie James Earney

Lonnie J. Earney, 70, of Cochrane, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday, July 30th, 2025. He was born on May 14, 1955, to Dallas and Marion (Suchla) Earney. Lonnie attended C-FC School and proudly served in the United States Navy from 1973 to 1976, stationed aboard the USS Hancock (CVA-19) as part of the 7th Fleet. In later years, Lonnie was honored for his valiant and courageous role in Operation Frequent Wind, the U.S. military's final evacuation of American civilians and at-risk Vietnamese from Saigon on April 29-30, 1975. The significance of his actions during that historic mission was deeply appreciated-a proud chapter in his life. On October 20, 1979, Lonnie married the love of his life, Rita Mahutga, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Arcadia, Wisconsin. Together they raised one son, Eric. Lonnie worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 32 years, taking on many roles-from sandblaster on the dams to crane operator, a job he truly loved. After retiring in 2010, he continued his passion for crane work with Wanzek Construction, helping build ethanol plants and erect wind turbines across the western states. He officially retired for good in 2017. Racing was one of Lonnie's greatest passions. From 1978 to 2005, he pursued his love of speed on the racetrack, forming deep bonds with fellow drivers who became like family. He had the need for speed and left-hand turns all the way! Not only was he a fierce competitor behind the wheel, but he was also a trusted mentor in the pits-always making time to help fellow drivers with chassis set-ups, mechanical issues, or anything that could make their cars handle better and go faster. His generosity, skill, and sportsmanship earned him widespread respect. Lonnie also had a soft spot for Mopar muscle cars-especially his beloved 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. He took great pride in restoring it and proudly entered it into numerous area car shows, where it often brought home awards. He also traveled throughout the Midwest to attend large swap meets, where over the years, fellow vendors became like family. It was another way he connected with people who shared his passion for engines, chrome, and craftsmanship. He and his son, Eric, shared a deep bond over hunting and fishing, often spending time together in the woods and on the water. Whether turning wrenches or lending a hand, Lonnie found joy in doing for others. His greatest happiness came from time spent with his wife, son, grandson, daughter-in-law, and his beloved grand-doggies. Lonnie is lovingly survived by his wife of 45 years, Rita; son, Eric; daughter-in-law, Beth (Skoy); and grandson, Aiden. He is also survived by his siblings: Gerald (Cheryl) Earney, Janet Ayers, Phyllis Hedberg, Diane (Russ) Prenot, and Dennis (Michelle) Earney; as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family members, cherished friends, and a lifelong circle of fellow racers and gearheads. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to St. Croix Hospice of Menomonie for their exceptional care, compassion, and support during Lonnie's final days. The outpouring of love and support-through calls, texts, messages, and stories shared on social media-has brought comfort and strength in the days following Lonnie's passing. Your kindness and memories mean more than words can say. Lonnie will be remembered for his bravery, kindness, quick wit, dedication, and adventurous spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated On Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Waumandee, with Father Albert Antonysamy as celebrant. Inurnment will follow at the Parish Cemetery. A memorial gathering will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:00 AM until the hour of the Mass.
