Obituary (written by Loreen Hartman)

Loreen Hartman

Dec 3, 1929 to June 27, 2025

Loreen was born on December 3, 1929, in Braddock, ND. She lived there with her parents and four sisters until the age of 18. From there, Loreen moved to Aberdeen, SD, and took three years of nursing to earn her RN degree from the Presentation College of Nursing. She graduated in 1951 and accepted her first nursing position in Chamberlain, SD. In the fall of 1951, Loreen took a post graduate course at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. From there, she moved back to her home state of North Dakota. She was an obstetrics charge nurse in St. Alexius in Bismarck, ND.

Loreen moved to Ortonville, MN, in July of 1953, and she married Bill Hartman on Oct 2, 1953. They made their home in Milbank, and they owned and operated Bill’s Super Value until Bill’s death in December of 1995. Loreen worked as a nurse in Ortonville and Milbank during their early years of marriage. She also worked in the store until the demands of a growing family needed her at home.

Loreen was an active member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters. She taught Natural Family Planning for many years and also assisted her husband in teaching religious education to high school juniors for about 15 years. In her later years, Loreen accompanied many people in the loss of family members by helping them plan out the funeral liturgies. Influenced by the monks of Blue Cloud Abbey, Loreen was also a Benedictine oblate.

Loreen was a devoted wife, mother to her 12 children, and grandmother to her 48 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren. In age order, her children are William (Diane) Hartman, Dean (Tammie) Hartman, Beverly (Patrick) McCartney, Jean (Tim) Graf, Mary Sitter, Robert (Linda) Hartman, Carol (Scott) Brody, Lois (Richard) Mahoney, Jim Hartman, Karen (Greg) Kueny, Fr. Tom Hartman, Mark (Becky) Hartman; three sisters: Delores Razee, Donna Bolan, and Glenaris Sisco.

She was preceded in her death by her husband, William, better known as “Bill”; her parents: Tom and Elenora Marx son-in-law, Steve Sitter; siblings: Mary Ellen and Michael; and two infant great-grandchildren: Parker and Abel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 113 S. 6th Street, Milbank, SD, 57252.
